HOCKEY.
WET WEATHER AND MUDDY GROUNDS. For the first time this season the hockey competitions were affected by rain and wet and muddy grounds. The fourth and fifth grade and primary schools' matches were postponed, and there were many absentees in the ranks of the ladies' teams, some of which took the field with only five players. At one ground the referee and two teams turned out in full strength, but the ball had been left behind and so no match was played. The match between Trinity and Sydenham attracted a fair amount of interest, and despjte the sodden conditions a fair exhibition of hockey was witnessed. The lighter Sydenham team appeared to be more accustomed to the slippery ground and looked like winning, but Trjnity made a belated effort and managed to even the scores. University was superior to Selwyn, who had three junior boys in the team, none pf whom was up to senior standdard. At half-time University led by 4 goals to 1, and at time the score was (5 goals to 4. A brilliant exhibition of forward play bv E. Cooper enabled RedcliiTs to snatch a victory over Technical, although the latter led by 3 goals to 2 until the last quarter of an hour. ,The following table shows the positions of the senior teams:—
