GOLF.

NOTES OF THE DAY.

IBy E. M. MACFARLANE.] A paragraph from the decisions by the Rules of Golf Committee reads: A and B were playing a match. A had a caddie, B had not. At a certain hole B could not see the flag and asked A's caddie to hold it up. B played, and the ball struck the caddie. B claimed the hole. A objected on the ground that the caddie was engaged by B for the particular shot. Which is correct?

Answer: B is correct. A need not have allowed his caddie to show the hole to B.

"H°"W grateful we golfers ought to be," writes Eernard Darwin, "that our game will last us almost as long as we last ourselves, and that nonsensical hope springs up eternally in our ridiculous breasts. There comes a time of life when the sprinter realises that, if he has not run 100 yards in 10 seconds, he never will; he is done with once and for all. Similarly the golfer must sometime know, though he does not admit it, that it is extraordinarily unlikely that he will ever drive any farther than he does now. But thank goodness, our game holds, for ever, scope for improvement in one direction; we can never chip and putt so well but that we may not learn to do it better. No other game contains so definite, so incontrovertible, a reason for cheering up."

L. J. Taylor, who has produced some creditable rounds at Shirley recently in the match play series of the Campbell Cup, has now reached the final. In successive rounds he has disposed of J. D. Marks, C. Holdsworth, and J. D. Hutchison. He will receive two strokes from H. W. Macfarlane in the final, which will be played after the competition for the Denniston Cup i 6 decided.

According to an Australian exchange the prospect of seeing the greatest of golfers, R. T. Jones, in action in Australia ie rapidly being transformed into a certainty. Thus the "Australasian": —"A visit from the superb golfer 'Bobby' Jones may now be regarded as almost ensured for centenary year. Arrangements are well in hand for bringing him to Australia in 1934. The visit will be the greatest golfing event in the history of golf in Australia."

Several previous unsuccessful attempts have been made (by J. U. Kirkwood) to induce this remarkable golfer to visit Australia for exhibition matches; his inability to comply with such being largely due perhaps to his contract with. Warner Brothers for motion golf pictures.

The English Golf Union's new standard scratch score, which came into force on January 1 last, has, as was expected, tightened up scratch scores in England considerably. English Soli papers recently to hand contain sts of revised scratch scores of many courses, from which it is noted the tightening up process varies considerably. Some courses, for instance, have been reduced as much as six strokes, others by five, but in the majority of cases this reduction amounts to either one or two strokes, while some other courses' scratch scores remain unaltered. In three cases, moreover, the standard scratch score has even been raised.

Scores in the bogey competition at Shirley on Saturday were not impressive. From a glance at the scores returned, as published in "The Press" of Monday's issue, it seems that there is little necessity to reduce bogey figures or the standard scratch score st Shirley. It may be considered, however, that there is a greater need <o readjust many handicaps if the cards returned on Saturday can be taken as a fair test. Only C. J. Ward (2 up), A. L. Cropp, L. Dougall, M. K. Gray, and G. W. Haverfield played to their respective handicaps and returned cards of all square.

The British open championship, which concluded at St. Andrews last week, resulted—as many expected it would—in another triumph lor an American golfer. A notable feature of this event was the success oi American professionals, who occupied five of the first six places with scores of 292 to 295. They were closely pursued, however, by British professionals, eight of -Thorn were included in the first sixteen, the sixteenth player, Havers, with a _ total of 297, being only five strokes behind Shute, the ultimate winner, and Craig Wood, who both registered a great performance, at their first attempt, moreover. Of the British professionals Easterbrook, with 293, was outstanding, while C. J. H. Tolley and J. McLean, the Scottish champion, headed the amateurs with 298 each. B °th Shute and Craig Wood, winner and runnerup respectively, have been playing consistently good golf this year in America. Between them, in fact, ■ they made practically a clean sweep of Californian winter tournaments for 1933, some of which included the following open events, Miamrßiltmore, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Gasparilla, and a match play open tournament at San Francisco.

<Sarazen the defending title holder, aeafn made a bold bid at St. Andrews with a total of 293, which was exactly tenrtrokX ™re than his versy . j an unsettling effect, & b Sh?'diHell to tie with Diegel in third place. ■Walter Hagen's form at St. Andrews « rra fn the third round ana 82 in remarkable lapse is almost incor.ceiv able.

Th« rules of golf committee recommends that players should not concede putts to their opponents.

Golfer Sinks Opponent's Ball. "I ought never to play golf ag®" 1 ' declared Rex Hartley, an English ecSer, recently. The Straight Left Arm,

R. T. Jones declares that the main advantage of a straight left arm is that it increases the arc of the back-swing and hence the potential power of the stroke. It is not difficult to see how this is so. If you regard the left arm and the club-shaft as the spoke of a wheel, you will see that any bending of the left arm reduces the length of the spoke, and you are bound to get a smaller wheel. The wider arc has a double advantage. In the first place it ensures that the head of the club will travel as nearly as possible in a straight line through the ball for a greater distance on either side, and thus gives a greater margin of space within which the face of the club will come squarely on to the ball. The wide arc also gives the hands room to move. One of the troubles of the physically powerful player is that he is so eager to bring his strength into play that he has not the patience to give himself the necessary space in which to apply it. Jones's straight left arm greatly increases the distance the head of the club has to travel between the top of the swing and the ball. In other words, the speed with which the head of the club is moving is greater as compared with the speed of the arm-swing.—From "Golfing." CHRISTCHURCH CLUB.
