That school committees coulfl save as much as 30s a year on their bankI ing accounts by hanking wii.h the ■ Post Office Savings Bank rather than with the ordinary trading , banks was mentioned by the chairman (Mr C. R. N. Mackie) at the general meeting of delegates to the Canterbury School Committees' Association last evening, and after a , short discussion it was decided to ■ recommend to school committees that they open accounts with the Post Office Savings Bank. "Some committtees have been concerned over the ordinary banking charges being so high, and it was suggested that as many as possible should open accounts with the Post Office Savings Bank and so reduce the banking charges," said Mr Mackie. "My own school did it and we have savecV 30s a year. I have been questioned t>y several schools about the matter. Some committees appear to thir\k that there are some bars to takin this action, but- there is no more d \fficulty in opening an account in th S Post Office Savings Bank than in a.T) ordinary bank. Separate accounts >?an be held." In reply to tho statement of a delegate that his awmittee had been unable to get B'ducation Board cheques paid into the Post Office / Savings Bank account, Mr Mackie said that he thought the bank would., accept them. A delegate asked if it would 'oe fair to transfer an iiccount frorA a bank which had at '• one time tarried the committee over a difficult period with an over draft.
