LONGBEACH ROAD BOARD.

At the monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board, held yesterday, there were present: Messrs J. P. McQullkin (chairman), W. J. Anderson, H. Watts, A. Moore, and L. Maginness. The bank pass book showed a credit of £7 15s 9d. The chairman reported on the local bodies' conference, held recently to discuss clearing the Ashburton and Hinds riverbeds of the overgrowth of willows, gorse, and broom. The clerk reported that Boundary road required attention. Asbburton Presbytery.

At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery, held yesterday, the tev. A. D. Kirkland (moderator) prewdtd.

A welcome was extended to the Rev. «• S. Watson, of St. Andrew's Presby®J»n Church, Ashburton. The Wakanui church committee yrote placing its financial position before the presbytery. JjJttpman, of Wellington) wrote that we presbytery's allocation for the current year for budget and missionary funds was £786. Of that amount £l3O 4d had already been paid. .Mr Kirkland was appointed examiner of the Assembly's Sunday school ®wminations. Cruelty to Animals. . spite of a warning issued by an Inspector of the Society for the Pre*®ntion of Cruelty to Animals some ago, a number of sheep unloaded at the Ashburton saleyards yeshad to jump from the trailer jo the ground, a distance of nearly i<mr feet, instead'of being passed down run way. At the meeting of the Success of Ashburton Lodge on Monday, A.D. Sister T. Eyles presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Sister Olsen in the death of her mother. Three candidates were initiated. Frost. Eleven degrees of frost was recorded at the Domain weather station yesterday morning. Inter-Schools' Rugby Football. The annual Rugby football match between the first fifteens of the Rangiora and Ashburton High Schools was played at the Ashburton Show Grounds yesterday, and resulted in a win for Rangiora by 24 points to 11, For Rangiora, Maunder scored three tries and Finch, W. Francis, and V. Francis one each, while W. Francis converted two tries, and Hooper converted one. B. Knox and McMillan each scored for Ashburton. one of which was converted by Knox, who also kicked a penalty goal. Mr G. W. Brown was the referee. Ladies' Golf. A four-ball bogey match will be played among members of the ladies' section of the Ashburton Golf Club tomorrow, partners and opponents to be chosen. The draw for the extra score to be played among the unqualified players is as follows: —Mrs S. H. Truman and Mrs Bennett, Miss E. Bruce and Miss M. Zouch, Mrs R. J. Tucker and Mrs W. R. Extras were contributed by Piper J. Sutherland. , At the monthly meeting of the school committee, there were present Messrs N. H. Griffith (chairman), Messrs R. Knox, L. J. Pratley. B T. Clothier, and D. R. MaeKay. The head teacher reported that the attendance for June had been 96 per cent, of the possible. Several pupils had gained awards in needlework in the Ashburton winter show. It was reported that arrangements for a concert in aid of school funds had been made, and it was decided that it should be held in September. Ninety-five points of ram fell on Sunday. The downpour was welcome for the soil a few inches below the surface is dry.
