NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. At the tenth annual meeting of the Rangiora Celtic Club, Mr F. Jackson presided. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted:—Patron, the Rev. Father Leen; spiritual director, the Rev. Father McKay; president, Mr T. A. Moran; vice-president, Mr F. Jackson; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. P. Brady: minute secretary and reporter, Miss Dorothy Brady; librarian. Miss Melva Jackson; trustees, Messrs F. Jackson and G. P. Brady; auditors, Mrs E. Wilson and Miss Kathleen Cassitiy; council, Mesdames E. Wilson, F. Jackson, G. Brady, Misses K. Cassidy, D. Brady, Messrs L. Moran, and J. C. Fahey. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association's hall was comfortably filled on Monday evening by a representative gathering of persons who attended to hear the principles of the New Zealand Legion outlined. The speakers were Messrs John Mac Gibbon, chairman of the Canterbury executive, K. M. Gresson, and E. W. Cuddon, members of the committee. The Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse) presided and introduced the speakers. The addresses were on the same lines as those given in Christchurch and other places in Canterbury, and emphasised that the legion was out to abolish party politics, and to get the people to take a more intelligent interest in public affairs and to effect reforms. The -speakers, who made it clear that the lesion did not wish to form a political party, were given a very attentive hearing, and replied to the few questions asked. About 20 of those present were enrolled as members, and the following provisional committee was appointed:—Messrs W. E. Barton (chairman), F. B. Glasgow (hon. secretary), and Messrs C. Rands, W. Stalker, A. H. Palairct, W. C. Prosser, C. Taylor, and J. C. Scott, with power to add to their number. A motion of thanks to the speakers, moved by Mr Palairet. was carried unanimously.

Competitions were won by Mrs D. Erickson and Miss O. Foster and by Messrs H. Gray and R. Stewart. Novelty dances were won by Miss Hunt and 'Mr T. Roberts. The music was supplied by Mr R. Cairke. Mr C. H. Watson was master of ceremonies. SCARGILL. The Scargill Miniature Rifle Club continued its weekly handicap competition shoots on Saturday evening, when the tenth of the series was fired. The winners of the buttons were J. Love, E. Foster, and G. Pannett. The competitors now leading for the aggregate are: G. Gibb 678, G. Pannett 678, G. Greig 665. Johnson, presented Mr R. Inch, who is to be married to-day, with a rug. WAIPARA. At the monthly meeting of the Waipara branch of the Women's Institute Miss R. Berry gave a demonstration on how to make the latest tea cosy and Mrs Harrison gave a demonstration on making rag mats. The competition for the best plate of pikelets was won by Mrs Hunt, with Mrs Ferguson second. In the knitting competition Mrs R. Symonds was first and Mrs Uren second. The hostesses were Mesdames Aycion, Blake, and Conway. The newly formed Omihi and Waipara Bible classes held a combined social evening. A most enjoyable time was spent in games. A competition was won by Miss J. Darroch. Musical items were given by Miss J. Hamilton Mr Stanfleld, and Master E. Whyte. GLENROY. A successful concert organised by the Tennis Club was held in the Hall. There was a large attendance and an excellent programme, arranged by Mrs R. G. Keith, Miss A. Ure, Messrs P. Isherwood, and J. Thwaites, was contributed by the following:—Choruses tennis members; vocal solos, Mesdames w. Roseveare and Bryant, Misses V Jewell and B. Reddecliffe, Messrs F Isherwood, Jones, Finlayson, Maxwell P. Isherwood, and J. Thwaites; humorous items, Messrs H. J. Roseveare and P. Collison; pianoforte solos. Miss Pannett; pianoforte duets. Misses A Ure, V. Jewell, P. Isherwood, and N Gray; recitation, Mr W. E. Dennis. The accompanist was Miss H. Maffey. Nearly £7 was raised as a result of the entertainment.

A hare drive in aid of the Glenroy Collie Club's funds was held last week. Thirty-one guns were out and a bag of 147 hare* was secured.

ASHLEY BANK. A social organised by the basketball club in aid of the school funds was well attended. Prizes went to Mrs H. Reynolds tPapanui), Miss Bradshaw second, and Messrs W. Loffhagen and Mr M. Newel!. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs W. A. Vallance. Misses Hughcy, H. Harris, and Z. Beattie. and Mr E. E. Collie (bagpipes). Mr H. Schmidt acted as master of ceremonies. The basketball match Ashley v. Cust resulted in a win Jor Ashley by 6 goals to 5. Mrs K. Smith was referee.

Heavy frosts have been experienced lately, followed by the maximum of sunshine. SOUTHBRIDGE. The monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board, held on Monday evening, was presided over by Commissioner J. H. Hampton. The health inspector's report showed that no cases of infectious disease had been reported ifom Southbndgc lor the last month. A donation of £2 was received from the Governor-General's winter relief fund, and it was decided to pass the amount over to the local relief committee. Cmr. W. G. Hill, chairman of the works committee, reported that shingle repairs were in hand and that carting would continue for another live days. He suggested metalling a footpath from Mr Kilbridge's frontage to Dr. Hunt's, and obtaining a supply of shingle from the Kakaia river-bed for patching repairs later. Complaint was made of unsatisfactory service from the Town Hall piano, and the hall committee was requested to take the matter up immediately with the firm which supplied the instrument. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, U>33 wa.i received from the Audit Oflice and was linally adopted. Mr C. Brittlifl was appointed dog-tax collector. A successful concert was given by members of the Southbridge branch of the Women's Institute in aid of its mnds. MrsW. C. The committee has power to add to its number. Saturday, October 7, is the date of the contest. It was decided to make application to the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the use of its show ground and buildings. It was stated that Mr Hean, secretary of the Canterbury Provincial Bands Association, and Mr E. R. Hopwood, secretary of last year's contest at Ashburton, were willing to give the committee every assistance in organising the contest. At a meeting called by the Ellesmere Unemployment committee to consider the organisation of relief within the Ellesmere county, Mr John Heslop presided, and there were present representatives of the Southbridge, Leeston, and Brookside branches of the Women's Institute, the Dunsandel branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, the Ellesmere Farmers' Union, Ellesmere County Council, Southbridge and Leeston Town Boards, and other citizens. The chairman explained that the unemployment committee did not receive sufficient money from the Unemployment Board to give the relief workers the time they were entitled to arid they were not receiving enough money to keep their families. It was therefore necessary to adopt other means of giving assistance. In reply to a question the chairman said that it was expected that a sum of £2O would be received from the Lyttelton Harbour Board's grant. Mr S. R. Wright, county engineer, who acted as secretary, said that a return had been received from 24 relief workers, showing that there were 23 cases where blankets were required. Seven requests had been received for girls' shoes, eight for women's clothing, three for food, four for coal, and six for boys' boots. Mr F. Rowell said that apart from the relief workers there were other cases where help was desperately needed. It was decided that all present should form a central committee and that sub-committees should be appointed at Dunsandel. Killinchy. Irwell-Brookside, Southbridge. and Leeston. Conveners were apnointed, and Mr C. G. Fisher was elected secretary. It is intended to ranvass the district for goods. The following were appointed an Heslop, D. W. Hayes. W Johnston. A. J. Inwood, A. Anderson, F. Rowell, and C. G. Fisher.

SEDGEMERE. At a well attended meeting held at Sedgemerc on Monday Mr L. Chambers, chairman ot the school committee presiding, preliminary arrangements were made for celebrating the jubilee of. the Sedgemere school, which occurs in the near future. Messrs J. P. McEvedy and A. J. In wood, two of the early pupils, spoke in favour of suitably marking the jubilee, and all present were appointed a general committee, with Mr J. P. McEvedy as chairman and Mr A. J. Inwood as secretary. The following were appointed an executive:—Messrs J. P. McEvedy, A. J. Inwood, J. Brown, J. T. Parkin, Mrs F. Gulliver and Miss J. McLaughlin. Another meeting is to be held in about a month's time.

HORORATA. Lambs have made their appearance on some farms in the district, the largest flock being on the property of Mr W. Thwaites. Wintry conditions set in on Sunday, when rain and snow fell, 109 points being recorded on Monday morning.

CLARKVILLE. At the annual dance organised by the Clarkville Football Club Mr F. Miller's band supplied the music. Messrs I. Holland and R. Hassall acted as masters of ceremonies. Winners of the novelty dances were:—Lucky spot Miss D. Rice and Mr J. Paget: Monte Carlo, Miss A. Higginson and Mr A. Cherry. A basketball match between Rangtora B and Clarkville resulted in a win for Clarkville by 24 goals to 5. Miss J. Dreaver was referee. STYX. At the monthly meeting of the Styx Presbyterian Women"? Missionary Union and Ladies' Guild Mrs Farrar presided. The secretary read a preparcd paper on the Canton village mission, and Mrs Barnes read an article on the Canton hospital. Miss Preston was elected stamp secretary. SPRINGSTON SOUTH. At the monthly meeting of the Springston branch of the Women's Institute. Mrs J. W. Kime presided. Motions of sympathy with members w'no had sutrered bereavement, and with those who are ill were passed. Arrangements were made for the second birthdav. which will be celebrated this month. Mrs J. M-ilne gave a demonstration on smocking. Red Cross matters were discussed and it was decided to carry on the same as last year. Mrs A. Hughes was appointed secretary. The competition, a darned sock, was won by Mrs J. W. Kime 1 and Mrs T. J. Kimber 2. A letter was received from Miss Havelaar asking for assistance. Several members offered to make up material.. Basketball and football matches between the Springston and Springston South school teams were played at Springston South. The basketball was won'by Springston by 17 goals to 0, and the football by 6 points to 3. Miss Harvie refereed the basketball game and Mr Fraser the football match. A meeting to form a basketball club was held on Monday. It was decided to name the club Wakaipa, the former name of the Springston South district. Miss Mona Carter was elected capiain. A very hard frost was experienced in Broomfield yesterday morning. GREENDALE. The Greendale branch of the Women's Institute met in the Baptist Sunday School, Mrs Worsfold presiding. A demonstration on thrift articles was given by Mesdames McMillan and \7. Stott, which was much appreciated. The competition for the best article made from a flour bag was won by Miss M. Adams, with Mrs Kussell second and Miss Wilson third. The hostesses were Mesdames G. E. Dean, L. Early, and E. Frew, and Miss E. Cullen. GREENPARK. At the weekly social and dance held in the Memorial Hall there was a fair attendance. The prize-winnex-s were Mrs Reg. Tobeck, Miss Rita Schroeder, Mr Ellesmere Stalker, and Mr Chas. Hill (Cloverlea). A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs Reg Tobeck and Mr A. H. Clark. The music was supplied by Mrs A. H. Clark. Mr A. H. Clark was the master of ceremonies. DARFIELD. A combined choir of 30 voices will give the sacred cantata "Olivet to Calvary" on Sunday at the Darfleld Memorial Hall. A collection will be taken up for the Malvern Relief of Distress Committee. Mr H. L. Spark, of Sheffield, will be the conductor. Mr J. R. Cullen presided at the monthly meeting of the Darfleld branch of the Farmers' Union. Dr. Hilgendorf gave an address on the work of the Wheat Research Institute. Samples of wheat were exhibited, and the difference in the growth of pickled and non-pickled wheat was most marked. Samples of bread baked by the institute were also exhibited and handed round for inspection. At the conclusion of the address the speaker answered questions, and was accorded a vote of thanks.

LAKE COLERIDGE. The monthly meeting of the Lake Coleridge branch of the Women's Institute was held at Mrs Hart's residence. The roll-call was a steam pudding recipe, to be sold for Id. The sales table, provided by Mrs Murchison, was most successful, and added 18s 5d to the funds. Enough peggy squares were collected for three quilts. Mrs Murchison, who contributed a complete quilt and 18 other squares, came first, Mrs Worsdale second with 56, and Mrs Gibson third with 36. During the month six other warm quilts were sent in . The competition for the best piece of fancy work was won by Mrs Bryant. The bring and buy was won by Mrs Worsdale, who brought a currant loaf and a small tin of sardines. The hostesses were Mrs Preston and Mrs Finlayson.
