Some years ago Mr A. E. Smith, who has a mining claim on the Shotover river, made some remarkable finds of coins on his claim, these ranging in dates from 1816 to 1858. They were mostly Australian coins, and included a sovereign, half-sovereigns, shillings, bronze tokens, an American five-cent piece, and an 1854 penny. They would appear to have lain buried in tha sands on the banks of the Shotover river for many years, Mr Smith suggesting that they had been there for 60 years. The reason for their existence was that in 1863 there was a very heavy flood, and those who populated what was then a fairly prosperous gold mining camp were forced to leave hurriedly without any of their possessions, which were buried by sand and other materials that was washed into the vallej,
