MILK MARKETING.
DOMINION DAIRY PRODUCE. (fUOiL OLT. OWN COHnUSPONDEMT.) LONDON, June 1. An editorial paragraph in the *' Week-end Review " refers to the restriction of imports of dairy produce in relation to the milk marketing scheme in England: "The public enquiry into the proposed Milk Marketing scheme," says the writer of the paragraph, "has been fixed for June 6, and is likely to be a long one. Far more important objections will have to be considered than in the hops and the bacon enquiries. Fortunately, however, most of the responsible objectors welcome the principle of the scheme and are only making suggestions for its greater efficiency. One of the most vital points that will no doubt be cleared up is whether the scheme can function at its best without the Milk Board's receiving legal ownership of the milk at one stage in the marketing procedure. But a marketing scheme alone, however excellent, cannot provide salvation for the milk industry, •which is now in a seriously depressed condition. Honest friends of Empire trade will admit that this is largely on account of the heavy imports of Dominion butter and cheese flung on the Home market under the provisions of Ottawa. It is, therefore, to be hoped that Mr Elliot will succeed in persuading Canada. Australia and New Zealand voluntarily to restrict their exports of milk products to Britain before the enquiry takes place. Milk at 3d a gallon in New Zealand means milk at something like the same price in Somerset and is equally injurious to producers in both places. If our cheese and butter-makers are driven out of business, the milk plan will become unworkable."
