SAFE BLOWERS AT WORK.
♦ THUKK OFFICES ENTERED AM) JEWELLERY STOLEN. An attempt to drill and blow a safe was made during the week-end by thieves, who entered three business premises in Barlow's building, at the corner of Hereford street and Colombo street. The attempt to open the safe < in the office of Barlow Brothers) was unsuccessful, but a quantity of jewellery, valued at ,C2O, was stolen from a jeweller's workshop in the building. When Mr A. Whitworth, a jeweller, visited his workshop, on the second floor, on Sunday afternoon, he found that the glass panelling of his door had been broken, and Ihe lock had been manipulated. Jewellery worth £2O was missing. He called detectives, and the building was eventually searched without result. The door opening into the office of Barlow Brothers was locked at the time Mr Whitworth made his discovery, but later it was found open, and it is thought that the thieves may have beenin the office when he tried the door. The locks had been sprung at Barlow Brothers' office, and a cabinet removed to make work on the safe easier. A brass facing had been taken off the safe and attempts made to bore through the door. Explosive was used, but neither the safe nor the contents of the room was damaged. As it happened, there was no money in the safe. Nothing is missing from the office. The toilet room of Messrs Horgan and Fcaron next door to the office of Barlow Brothers was the third place visited. The door was damaged, but nothing was taken from the room.
