A complaint of damage to cheese caused by rats and a request that the Turua wharf shed should be made rat proof was received by the Thames Harbour Board from the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company. Limited. The company contended that the damage occurred during the period when the produce was awaiting shipment. A report by the wharfinger stated that rats were very rarely seen in the shed. It was impossible to make the shed rat proof, but little damage, if any, had occurred at Turua. It was stated that every precaution was taken to keep rats in check at the wharf shed. The board decided to reply in these terms.
