PIONEER MOTORCYCLE CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL YEAR. ACTIVITIES REVIEWED IN ANNUAL REPORT. A successful year is recorded in the annual report of the Pioneer MotorCycle Club, which will be presented to the annual meeting of the club on Saturday evening. "The club's year has been a most active one," states the report. "Although some of the events ' received poor support, the majority ! were outstanding successes, and the i committee feels that In view of the difficult times the 1932-33 programme has been creditable and worthy of the high traditions of the club." The opening run of the season, which was held at Waihora Park, was attended by many riders from all parts of Canterbury. Other social events of the season included runs to Lake Lyndon and to the Loburn Domain. "The committee would like to take this opportunity," states the report, "of recommending to members that the social activities of the club be in every way encouraged and supported, as it is only by this means that the proper club spirit can be maintained." Beach Meetings. Three beach race meetings were held during the season, the first including a 60 mile race, the second the championship races, and the third the flying mile record attempts. The 50 mile race was won by Mr R. A. Carpenter, the light-weight championship by Mr F. G. le Valllant, and the middle-weight championship by Mr G. W. Hockley. Although the beach was particularly heavy, Mr Hockley in winning the middle-weight championship recorded the remarkable average speed of 78.6 miles an hour. The light car beach championship was won by Mr H. D. Christie. Owing to the unruliness of the spectators and the heavy state of the beach, the flying mile record attempts resulted in no very fast times being recorded. The best time of the day was created by Mr L. Homer at 88.6 miles an hour, and the best light car time by Mr ... R. Tench at 72.4 miles an hour. The behaviour of the spectators at the clubs beach meetings has caused the committee a considerable amount of concern. ■*-<»

' Elaborate plans were made for the > introduction of path-racing in the Show Grounds, but the event did not receive the support expected. This result was no doubt due to the rather unsuitable nature of the course. A miniature tourist trophy race was held at Rolleston on May 13 and resulted m a victory for Mr V. C. Browne. A grass track meeting was set down for December 17, but as the entries received were poor the event was abandoned. On January 14, however, the club, in conjunction with the Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club, held a meeting at the Ashburton racecourse, and good entries were received. The South Island middle-weight championship was decided at this meeting and was won by Mr R. G. Ranby. Mr Ahrens, of Palmerston North, made an appearance, but unfortunately damaged his engine in the second race and was not able to compete thereafter, Hill-Climbing Championship. The hill-climbing championship for motor-cycles was this year strictly confined to machines standard in every respect. Two novice riders, Messrs D. Blackwell and W. Needham, carried off the honours in the form of the open and light-weight championI ships respectively. In the light car events Mf J. R. Tench won the standard car class and Mr B. J. Tench the sports event. A hurly-burly event was held at Harewood on May 27 and was won by Mr J. Deyell. Thiß competition marked the conclusion of the season's events. The club's challenge cups were won as follows:—The Bonnington Cup, Messrs G. W. Hockley and V. C. Browne (for most points in open competitions); the Wakefield Cup, Mr D. Blackwell (fastest hill climb, open class); the Triumph Cup, Mr D. Blackwell (fastest climb by private owner in hill climb); the Moir Cup, Mr V. C. Browne (most points in motor-cycle events by private owners): the Big Tree Cup, Mr W. Needham (fastest hill climb, light-weight class); the Harley Cup, Mr G. A. Urry (most points in major trial by private owners); the Kennett Cup, Mr R. A. Carpenter (winner longest beach race); the Wooff-Salvesen Cup, Mr G. W. Hockley (winner major reliability trial); the David CrozJer Cup, Mr J. R. Tench (most points gained in light car events). The report thanks Mr P. C. Crooke, of the City Motor and Cycle Garage, for his services during the year, and comments on the valuable service given by the South Island Motor Union. The report also thanks the patron (Mr F. R. Jones) for■his; services and Messrs Douglas Allison, H. D. Christie, Jones Motors, Ltd. Tench Brothers, Ltd., and Wooff and Salvescn for the gift of prizes.
