BOOTS AND SHOES.

DISTRIBUTION TO SCHOOL CHILDREN. WORK OF BUSINESS MEN'S COMMITTEE. About 1000 children of the primary Schools are receiving a new pair of boots or shoes through the efforts of the Business Men's Relief of Distress Committee. Some have already been sent out and the main distribution commenced yesterday. Recently the D.I.C. and Mr H. F. Herbert, of the Herbert ** Shoe Store, each gave 100 pairs and the Business Men's Committee allocated sufficient money to provide about 1000 pairs for the pupils of the primary schools, the assistance of the staffs being enlisted to find out how many children required new footwear. As the boots and shoes came to hand from the manufacturers they were sent to those requiring them, and, with the distribution yesteruay, it is hoped that the 1000 pairs available will meet the urgent requirements. Mr M. E. Lyons (secretary of the committee), stated yesterday that at a number of the schools there were children without boots or shoes, and hundreds of others were wearing footwear that could not possibly keep out the cold and damp. Enquiries showed that the teachers themselves had been relieving the position to a remarkable extent, and at a considerable amount of sacrifice to themselves. Not only had they provided footwear but even clothing in some urgent cases. He paid a tribute to them for their work in that direction. That parents were grateful for the footwear for their children was shown by the many letters of thanks the committee had received. Many families were suffering great hardships because the fathers were receiving only relief wages, and their earnings were so slender that it was quite impossible to provide adequate clothing. Mr Lyons added that other supplies •would follow as they became available.
