SOMERFIELD BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

SUB-POST OFFICE WANTED. The need for the erection of a subpost office to serve the Beckenham and Somerfield districts was stressed at the monthly meeting of the Somerfield Burgesses' Association last night. The president, Mr R. Jones, was in the chair. The secretary reported that the Beckenham association had been unable to send a representative to the meeting last night. It had, however, been agitating for the erection of a post office for some time. The only concession granted so far had been a recommendation to the CoVrtinissioner of Stamps that two shops in the vicinity should be given permission to sell stamps. , The chairman said that even if this recommendation were granted the Somerfield association would not be satisfied. There was a great need lor a post office, and he felt that if the Postal Department were supplied with actual facts, such as the population of the district, some good might result. If necessary a public meeting could be convened. After somd further discussion it was decided to wait on the postmaster asking for his support to the proposal.

Recreation Ground. The chairman reported that in acdance with the decision reached by the last meeting of the association, a deputation had waited on the parks and reserves committee of the City Council urging the need for a recreation ground in the district. The site proposed for the ground was at the corner of Studholme street running back to the cemetery. The following day the members of the reserves committee had visited the site, but so far no reply had been obtained. The executive of the association had chosen the site because it was considered the most central site available. The district telegraph engineer, Mr J. Fairbairn, wrote that the need for a public telephone box at the corner of Rose and Cashmere View streets had been subjected to careful investigation, but it had been found that as there were two boxes already within convenient distance of this corner, and as there was need for restricting expenditure as much as possible, the request be not granted. It was reported that Cardiff and Stennes avenues had been rolled and metalled. In answer to the request for the addition of some sign on the trams to denote the Somerfield district, the tramway board replied that the matter had already been brought before the board's notice by the Spreydon Burgesses' Association. They had asked that the sign 2B be changed to 2K, and that the destination sign be changed from Barrington street to Karitane. This request had been refused on the grounds that the expense— £Bo—was too great. The board would welcome any further suggestion from the association. The chairman stated that the idea of instituting the sign Karitane instead of Barrington street was not favoured by the association. The idea of suggesting any improvements in the signs was discussed at length, and after a motion that the sign, Spreydon, should be changed to Somerfield street, was lost, the meeting favoured a motion that a deputation wait on the general manager, Mr F. Thompson, asking that some improvement be made in the sign so as to avoid confusion to Somerfield residents. It was agreed that the executive should again approach the municipal electricity department with regard to the lighting of side streets. The chairman said that he considered that the repairs made to the Somerfield street drain by the Christchurch Drainage Board were totally inadequate, and that, the executive was endeavouring to have more satisfactory repairs effected. Mr G. Henderson offered a trophy to be awarded to the member who introduced most new members to the association during the next three months. It was reported that the membership of the association was 210.
