RELIEF FUND.

TOTAL REACHES MORE THAN £SOOO. YESTERDAY'S CONTRIBUTIONS. The contributions made yesterday to the Citizens' Relief of Distress Fund brought the total received up to £5133 10s Id. The honorary treasurer, Mr J. W. Niven, city treasurer, on behalf of the Business Men's Relief Committee, acknowledges the following additional contributions:—

Also, from Munday's, of Sydenham, clothing in addition to cash contribution to the value of £25; S. R. Ingold, 442 Colombo street, Sydenham, drapery to the value of £25. Staff of City Council. The whole of the office staff of the Christchurch City Council, at a meeting held on Monday afternoon to consider the business men's appeal on behalf of the Mayor's Relief of Distress Fund, unanimously decided to make regular contributions to the fund, on a salary basis, over the whole period of five months covered by the appeal. ACTIVITIES OF BUSINESS MEN'S COMMITTEE. DISTRIBUTION OF COAL. Regarding the progress being made by the appeal launched by the Business Men's Relief Committee, Cr. M. E. Lyons, the honorary secretary, stated yesterday that the ladies' committee was meeting with a very gratifying response. They were c6ncentrating on the provision of clothing for necessitous cases, and had arranged for central premises in Moling and Company's building, Oxford terrace. Contributions from the staffs of several firms had already been received, but it was not anticipated that a good indication of the response that employees were making to the appeal would be received until after next Friday. Lower Freights on Coal Wanted. The coal and fuel committee of the Business Men's Relief Committee since it started functioning and providing firing for distressed lamilies in Christchurch and vicinity, has distributed no fewer than 550 bags of coal. Three lorries are being kept on the move continually, and the scheme is working smoothly and efficiently. A proper card system has been evolved, and the possibility of duplication is reduced to a minimum.

Mr G. R. Hunter, chairman of the committee, stated yesterday that at present the committee was dealing solely with the cases of the registered unemployed; other cases in the meantime were being attended to by the HosDital Board and the Coal and Blanket Fund. Coal had been bought from three companies, and it was expected that 100 tons of coal would be received from various mines as a gift. One difficulty was that on coal costing 12s a ton the Railway Department was asking freight amounting to 18s 7d a ton: The committee was asking the department for a reduction in the freight charges, and it was hoped that something would be done in the matter, in view of the special circumstances. The mines were supplying coal at a cut rate, the bags for the coal had been given, and lorries and everything for the operation of the scheme were being supplied free of cost. Forty cords of wood were being supplied by the Selwyn Plantation Board, and the aim of the committee when this came to hand was to distribute a bag of wood and a bag of coal to everyone in need. MEDICAL PROFESSION. SUBSCRIPTIONS TO GO INTO COMMON FUND. The members of the medical profession in Christchurch have decided to place their contributions for the Business Men's Committee distress appeal into a common fund. This course was agreed to at a meeting of the local branch of the British Medical Association. Circulars were sent to members of the profession in the city yesterday. They will be asked to contribute to a common fund, instead of making individual donations, and the total amount will be credited to the appeal subscriptions. MILK FOR UNDER-FED CHILDREN. IPRISS ASSOCIATION TELEGiUM.) WELLINGTON, June 13. The Wellington "Smith Family" has undertaken to supply from next Monday half a pint of milk each school day to under-nourished children in city primary schools, private and public. The scheme has been arranged in co-operation with the School Hygiene Division of the Health Department, Dr. Ada Paterson giving her assistance and advice, and with the Milk Committee of the City Council, both the chairman (Councillor W. H. Bennett) and the general manager of the department (Mr R. E. Herron) supporting the scheme enthusiastically. Mr Herron has been authorised to arrange for the supply and delivery of the milk to the schools, and the producers are also assisting materially, and have agreed to supply milk for this purpose under a plan which will enable it to be placed in the schools at 9d a gallon. Even so, the cost will be considerable. The present estimate is £lB 2s lid a week, for 1547 children are to receive their halfpints of milk next week.
