PUBLIC LIBRARY.
NOTES FOR MONTH OF MAY.
May was a busy month in all de-, partments of the Canterbury Public Library, states the librarian, Mr E. J. Bell, in some notes on the activities of the Canterbury Public Library. From the circulating library 18,944 volumes were lent for home reading, an increase of 828 compared with May of last year. It was a good month also for new members, no fewer than 139 having enrolled. About 200 books j were added to the stock, rather fewer; than usual at this period of the year,! but the mails have, been small ones. In the reference library 12,401 books were consulted, an increase of 3000 compared with those made use of during May, 1932. At times all available accommodation was taken up by readers and students. To this section 24 volumes were added. The children's library experienced a very busy period, and more than 4000 ! books were lent for home reading. ISome interesting volumes were added to the shelves, fiction and non-flction. The process of weeding out the sections in the adult circulating library is steadily progressing. Up to the present about 650 out-of-date and dilapidated volumes have been withdrawn.
