RELIEF OF DISTRESS.

OFFERS TO ASSIST. The care of 20 families in which there are 173 children has been undertaken by a Christchurch citizen, who prefers to remain anonymous. The offer resulted from an appeal which Mr S. G. Holland, a member of the Business Men's Committee, made when addressing a meeting recently. The benefactor telephoned Mr Holland later in the day and said that he would like.to assist in the appeal and offered to take care of 20 families. The cases must be real cases for relief. In the 20 families which Mr Holland selected there were 173 children. The giver will in the meantime look after these families and do what he can to alleviate their distress. Another offer which has been received is one to supply 30 gallons of hot soup on every week-day, excluding Saturday, during the winter. This offer has been made by Mr Charles Knight, of the firm of James Knight, butcher, High street, and the work of preparation will be done by the staff of the firm. The supply will later be increased to 40 gallons a day. It will be available for distribution through the relief agencies, to whom application should be made. Supplies will be available towards the end of this week.
