SITUATION IN CHINA.

While it will probably take some time to liquidate the military situation a genuine effort to carry the Tangku Armistice into effect appears to be under way. A noticeable example of the improved feeling was the arrival at Peking of a Japanese aeroplane carrying an officer detailed by the Japanese army to offer condolences on the Chinese loss of life in the recent hostilities.
Meanwhile foreign dispatches report that the Japanese troops have begun to withdraw northward from Chinwangtao. On the Chinese side rapid progress is reported in the work of winding up the war-time organisations and transferring troops back to their provinces.
MISSING EXPLORER SAFE. SIX MONTHS IN CENTRAL ASIA. (Received June 9, 7.5 p.m4 PEKING, June 9. Word has reached Dr. Sven Hedin, the Swedish explorer, that Dr. Nils Ambolt, a Swedish scientist who has been missing in Central Asia since November, has now reached Khotan safely. Dr. Hedin has therefore recalled the relief party he sent out.—"The Times" Cable. [A message from Peking on May 10 said that Dr. Hedin was seeking the Nanking Government's permission t to lead a mixed Sino-foreign expedition into Singkiang to search for Dr. Ambolt, Six months before Dr. Ambolt had lost a caravan of 80 camels during a terrific snowstorm, among the mountains in Northern Tibet. He was forced to abandon the results of four years' research, in addition to a valuable collection of scientific instruments. Then he proceeded on foot toward the Cherchen oasis, 400 miles northward of UrumchL He had not since been heard of.l
