STONE'S DIRECTORY.
COMMON NAMES REVEALED. In Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland, Smith is easily the most common surname. This is revealed by i a study of the directory published by Stone, Son, and Company, X-td., t for these provinces, of which the 1933 edition has been issued. There are other surnames which require several pages of the directory. Brown is in second place, but is several hundreds behind Smith, and is closely followed by the combination of Thompson and Thomson. Fourth place is closely contested by Wilson, the combination of Johnstone, Johnson, and Johnston, and Jones. Then come Williams and Anderson, with a slight advantage to Williams. As well as an alphabetical directory of the persons in the four provinces, there are street directories of Christchurch, Ashburton, Blenheim, Greymouth, Nelson, and Timaru. Persons living in country towns and districts are also classified under their places of residence. There is a big folding map of Christchurch and suburbs. The directory gives much other valuable information, including the members of municipalities and counties, fire boards, harbour boards, and hospital institutions, and the addresses of clubs and societies. The usual official and judicial, professional and trade, and educational and ecclesiastical directories are included. There are extracts from statutes, population figures, statistics of imports and exports, and the last section is devoted to a table of the customs tariffs.
