RESEARCH WORK.
ACTION BY EDUCATIONISTS. IPBErig AIiSOt'UTIOX TEI.EORAU ' PALMERSTON NORTH, June 3. Support for a scheme to promote a Council of Educational Research in New Zealand was sought in a letter received by the Massey College Council from Mr D. M. Rae (principal of the Auckland Teachers' Training College), Mr F. Milner, president of the Secondary Schools' Association, and Professor Hunter, Vice-chancellor of the University of New Zealand. The council gave the scheme its approval, and signified its readiness to co-operate. Some years ago, stated the letter, the Carnegie Corporation of New York founded in Australia with a substantial endowment a council for educational research. It had been suggested to the corporation that a similar organisation might be established in New Zealand with advantage to education, and a committee consisting of the three persons named had been set up to report on the project. A point of great importance to members of the corporation was that there should be clear evidence that educationists and educational authorities throughout the countr5 r were prepared to give such a scheme their wholehearted support and offer facilities for any research that might be instituted and financed by the council. It was to be clearly understood that the committee was but making a preliminary investigation, and by setting up a committee the corporation had not in anv way committed itself to the foundation of a research council. That would be decided upon when the corporation had received the committee's report.
