ASHBURTON T.C.
REVIEW OF FIELDS. N.Z. SAPLING STAKES. The Ashburton Trotting Club will hold its winter meeting to-day. As usual at this fixture, the principal event to be decided is the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, the only classic race for two-year-olds in the Dominion. From a race of little significance the Sapling Stakes has steadily grown until it now ranks as one of the most important races on the trotting calendar. To-day's race promises to be the greatest contest for the race ever witnessed. It has been a phenomenal season as regards the production of highclass two-year-olds. There are more than half a dozen of these youngsters of very good class. For the last few months interest has been.steadily growing in the race, and the result is more eagerly awaited than perhaps a New Zealand Cup might be. While this race is the feature of the programme, there are good races in support, and v/ith such an attractive card the club should enjoy a most successful meetThe district has been favoured with fine weather during the last few days and the track is expected to be in its very best order. For the convenience of Christchurch visitors to the meeting a special train has been arranged for to leave the Christchurch station at 915 a.m., and will arrive a the Ashburton racecourse at 10.52 a.m.; it will commence the return journey at 4.40 pm. and is due in Christchurch at 6.15 p.m. M .. The programme is as follows. — 11.30 a.m.— LONGBEACH HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. 3min 51 sec class. Unhoppled trotters. One mile and a half. Alt Parrish .. »r» seno™,5 eno ™, " *Z Chiming Wrack scr Sea Gift •• tcr Chudloigli .. scr bister Mary .. scr Copper Money scr Royal P*" l ** Ecr Goulburn .. »« Winsome Laddie scr H-ikntere . • «<•' Groat Wood .. 36 Hokimai .. scr Harvest Dillon 36 Imperial Nelson ecr Jean Ballm .. 7Pcter Conquest scr Silk Coat .. 1-0 Renegade .. scr In the Longbeach Handicap it appears that Alf Parrish has only to leave the mark correctly to give a very good account of himself. He ran a very good second to Great Wood at New Brighton, and this may be his opportunity to earn winning honours. Renova shaped well at the last Ashburton meeting, where he ran second to Olson, and it would not take a very great improvement on that form for him to be seriously considered. Great Wood will again have a large following, as there was merit in his New Brighton win, and from 36 yards he is not by any means out of it. Of those who have not shown any place-earning form Royal Parrish, Sister Mary, and Sea Gift appear to have the best recommendations. Alf Parrish may be entrusted to most support, with Great Wood and Renova also well up in the market. 12.10 p.m.— TRIAL HANDICAP, of 100 eovs. 3min 45scc class. One mile and a half. Agile . . scr Modern Lady per Arion Axworthy scr Royal Audo . . scr Athelney Lass scr Royal wrack Bcr Bar None . . scr Social Pest .. scr Cam Dillon . . scr Solario .. scr Colene PnrrUh scr Sunbrown .. scr Colleen Derby scr Tangatu .. scr General Wrack her Thormvorthy scr Happy Bird .. scr A second to Guy Junior at Ashburton on May 20 and third to Summit and Compass at New Brighton suggest that Agile holds very good chances of success in the Trial Handicap. Colene Parrish created a good impression in her initial effort at Ashburton a few weeks ago, and Royal Audo can usually be depended upon to show up for most of the journey, but he is not a very good stayer. Social Pest has a few placed performances to his credit, and he is likely to race well here. Solario has shown promise on one* or two occasions without having ! yet finished in the money. Tangatu had numerous friends at New Brighton, but he failed to show up at any stage, but there was reason for his support at his last start, and he may be seen to better advantage to-day. Thornworthy has shown up in several races he has contested, but has failed to win in weaker company than this. Recent public showings indicate Agile, Social Pest, and Solario as being possessed of the best chances. 12.50 p.m.— BIRTHDAY HANDICAP, of 330 sovs. 4min 28sec class. Two miles. Arethufia .. scr Mountain Dell 12 Silver do Oro scr Sir Guy .. 12 Sunny Morn . . scr Muriel do Oro 24 First Flight . 12
Only seven horses w;ll contest the Birthday Handicap, but despite the small field the material is of the best to make an excellent race. Arethusa has not shown any recent form to warrant her being selected as one of those with more than an ordinary chance, and Silver de Oro is forfeiting a second to start in the race. In her most recent effort over two miles she ran a particularly good race to finish second to Gold Tinge at Oamaru. She was a winner over a mile and a half at the last Ashburton meeting and that showing will have to be kept in mind. However, Sunny Morn looks the best of the front markers when his form from the beginning of the season is studied, and he was responsible for two solid efforts at Addington. Muriel de Oro does not appeal from 24 yards, but the trio on 12 yards is a very strong combination. First Flight and Mountain Dell were suited by the mud at Addington, and both go well on top of the ground also, but Sir Guy looks capable of holding both safe. He has raced with rare consistency during the season and has won over all distances and was a winner at his last attempt over two miles. >' Admittedly he raced badly at the last Ashburton meeting, j but he showed a return to form the ' following week at Forbury Park, and has subsequently filled third place on two occasions. Sir Guy is a reliable pacer and is sure to race prominently all the way. He will probably have most supporters, with Mountain Dell second in demand. 1.30 p.m.— NEW ZEALAND SAPLING STAKES, 1933, | of 850 bovs. First horse to receive 525 sovs, socond horse 173 sovs, third horse 100 sovs, and fourth horse 50 sovs I from tho stake. Probably the best field that has ever contested the race will be seen out in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, for which there are fourteen acceptors. All have raced, and no fewer than four have shown winning form. Among the four is Chancellor, who has the distinction of being the only youngster in the race who has won more than one race, his wins having amounted to three. All successes were attained in the heavy go-
ing, and consequently he has not registered fast times. In view of his three recent successes he is deserving of every consideration, but it may be assumed that the class he beat in the North Island can hardly be compared with that he will encounter to-day. Durbar Lodge, Ltd.'s, bracket, Tondeleyo, Vanity Fair, and Greenmantle, in their only race did not show very encouraging form, but will probably be seen racing more prominently in the smaller field to-day. Of the three, Vanity Fair may have the best credentials. Blondie in his only start did not show up well, but a line could not well be taken, as there was such a big field in the only race he contested. Sir Gowan has raced only once to run fifth, but he has improved considerably since then, and of the less experienced his chance looks the best. A brilliant trial executed the week before last led to his engagement being continued. Evie Denver and Roma Girl are not as far advanced as several others in the field, and Full Hand may not be as forward as most of the field. If one of the less fancied candidates happens to win it may be Morello, who in his only start finished a good fourth after having had a Did run for most of the journey. On that occasion he finished very stoutly, and his effort contained more than a little merit. To deal with the better known brigade, Guy Junior, Village Guy, War Buoy, all winners, and Compass, who has been twice third and once second, the best racing record must be credited to Guy Junior, who would, . but for the Timaru mishap, probably ; have a record of having finished in a - place in all his starts. He was beaten at Oamaru by War Buoy, who scored ' very easily in slow time, but shortly ' before that race Guy Junior had gone ] 3min 23 3-ssec into second place to j Village Guy, and the Saturday fol- < lowing the Oamaru meeting he was > successful at Ashburton. Comparing Guy Junior and War Buoy through ■ Oamaru performances, War Buoy must J be preferred, but those calculations are likely to be upset to-day. Village Guy's chief claim to selection is his beating of Guy Junior and Compass at Timaru rather comfortably and in time, 3min 23 l-ssec, which has not been equalled by any other two-year-old of the season. He has not met either of those horses since, but in his ■ only race since he ran second to Gun- ' metal after having led for the greater portion of the journey. That race was run on a track not entirely suited to Village Guy, but, nevertheless, he recorded a very good performance. As the event at Timaru in which the three two-year-olds finished in the places appears to be the best guide , to prospects in this race, perhaps Village Guy is entitled to the greatest support, but he will not find the task ar. easy one to keep Guy Junior and War Buoy at bay. 2.15 p.m. — \CTON HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. 3min 28sec class. She finished third in both her two starts at Addington from the back, and now that she is on the front of the handicap she should be much better favoured in the running. Smooger has only to move away correctly to play a prominent part in the decision, but although he began well at New Brighton, he failed on both days at Addington to strike his hopples. Suncross is likely to race in forward order, and Reporter is in such good form at present that he looks as if he will once again prove very difficult to dispose of. A favoured trio may be Erin's Princess, Smooger, and Reporter. 2.55 p.m.— STEWARDS' HANDICAP, of 150 sots. Unhoppled trotters. 4min 58sec class. Two miles. Karl Bingen .. scr fUlk Coat .. 24 Kaclnim .. scr Enigma .. do Rndlcy •• 24 Olson •• '- Hosound . ■ 24 Another small field will contest the Stewards' Handicap, for which there are only seven acceptors. Silk Coat, a winner at his last start, which was at the same course, will be accorded solid support, and his most recent showing suggests he will make a bold bid for victory. Resound was third to Olson and Don Giovanni at New Brighton, and she should trot another good race. Raclaim, though not very reliable, would, if inclined, probably prove too good for this opposition, but those mentioned are of the more solid order Olson, from the back mark, is not handicapped out of the race, but probably Silk Coat and Resound will be most sought after by the public. 3.35 p.m.— TINWALD HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. 3mln 40seo class. However, he appears to hold a good winning chance in the Tinwald Handicap. Ruin has raced consistently without much luck in his last three starts. Great Minto has been placed in his last two starts. Jimmy de Oro was well backed at the Kaikoura fixture, only to finish fourth. An improvement may be expected from that run. Warpath will not be without friends, and Gunmctal and Royal Escort have recent form in their favour. Likely place fillers are Ronald Derby, Gunmetal," and Jimmy de Oro. 4.15 p.m.— WINTER HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. 3min 24scc elate. One mile and a halt. On that showing he will attract a number of admirers for the Winter Handicap, of a mile and a half, a distance which will better suit him than the mile event at Addington. He looks easily the best on the front mark, and his most likely danger will come from further back. On 12 yards is Avernus, a winner of last Saturday, and a very solid performer, who will probably test Indianapolis the most. The Ngingo-ngingo-Tactless bracket and John Jinks are others demanding respect. The last-named was the hero of the Addington meeting, and on account of the excellent form shown there he will have to be placed among those with best chances. Indianapolis is likely to be favourite, with Avernus and John Jinks next in the quotations. FOXTON R.C. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.
