A HOLIDAY IN THE SNOW.
SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. SCHOOL GIKLS RETURN. The girls and teachers of the Christehurch schools who have been at the secondary schools ski championships at Ball Glacier, returned to the city last evening looking fit and well after their week's holiday at Tasman Chalet, Mount; Cook. For many of the party the experience was new, and all praised the arrangements made for them. The following schools were represented: St. Margaret's. Collefe, Selwyn House, Christehurch Girls' High School, Amberlcy College, Craighead School (Timaru), Rangi-Ruru, Otago Girls' High School. Sports mistresses from most of the schools accompanied the girls. The object of the trip was to make it possible for these young people to be instructed in ski-ing, a sport practically new to this country. The Mount Cook Tourist Company offered very reasonable terms so that the trip could be made by as many as possible, and the girls spoke highly of the arrangements made both for their comfort and instruction.
Tasman Chalet, which is the old Ball Hut enlarged and brought up to date, was the headquarters of the party, and members of the Hermitage staff, including the chef and a party of guides, were at the Chalet. Each morning and afternoon the girls were taken to the snow fields on Rail (glacier, a short distance from the Chalet, and the various teams were given personal instruction in ski-ing by the guides. Rapid progress was made, and the very fine showing that all the girls made in the championship events on Saturday showed how quickly ski-ing can be learned. St. Margaret's College A team, consisting of Misses Isobel Wright, Betty Andrews, and Eleanor Everist, won the championship, and with it the cup presented by Mrs B. Sinilar, of Timaru. On Sunday morning the girls visited the Hochstetter ice falls, and a party of teachers went as far as the Malte Brun Hut.
