PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO TUB VUEHti.) GREYMOUTH, May 22. Messrs H. Bignell (Greymouth) and R. Wild (Hokitika), who have been at-1 tending the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board in Christchurch, returned on Saturday to the West Coast. The Rev. S. W. Webber, minister at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wostport, was called to Auckland on Saturday morning owing to the death of his father. . Mrs P. Duncan (Dunedin) is visiting her sister, Mrs Arnold, in Greymouth. , . ... Mrs R. McLaren, who has been visiting Wellington, returned on Saturday to Greymouth. Mrs W. Ogllvie (Gladstone) and Miss E. Dunstan, who have been on a visit to Kurow, returned on Saturday. Messrs H. C. Bell, I. D. Bell, and R. G. Bell (Christchurch) are visiting the West Coast. J Mr J. Mcßrearty arrived to-day from Dunedin on a visit to his father, Dr. J. W. Mcßrearty. Miss N. Ostler (Auckland) is spend- ; ing a aoliday on the West Coast, and is visiting the South Westland glaciers.

Obituary. The death occurred on Friday of Nurse Emily Lough, at Westport She was 71 years of age and was a native of Berkshire, England, coming to New Zealand E9 years ago in the s.s. Mosgiel. She moved to Westport from Timaru 44 years ago, and has since carried on the profession of midwife, j She is survived by four daughters and six sons. She was one of the oldest members of the Salvation Army in New Zealand. Mount Greenland. The Westland County Council is proposing to vote a sum to put the road to Mount Greenland at Ross into good order. The road is used a good deal for mining operations in the locality. In the past some good gold has been found there by the Mount Greenland and other companies, Greymouth Jockey Club. A meeting of the District Committee of the Greymouth, Jockey Club was held on Friday, the chairman, Mr T. E. Coates, presiding. Mr Coates was appointed delegate to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference in Wellington. Trainers' licenses were granted to C. J. Walshe and R. J. Flower (provisional), and jockeys' licenses to C. J» Walshe, V. A. Lee, and R. Menzies. Details of fines imposed during the Easter racing circuit were received, and the following were remitted: A. Beban £1 for late arrival of his horse in the birdcage at Hokitika, Miss J. Bailie £1 for late scratching of her horse Full Crop, and W. Blackmun £1 for racing in other than his own colours. The following dates for next season's racing were approved: Kumara, Easter Monday, 1934; Reef ton, January 5 and 6, and April 11, 1934; Nelson, April 21 and 23, 1934. Later the committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club met, Mr T. E. Coates, chairman, presiding. Messrs J. W. Hannan, C. L. Kettle, A. Beban, W. H. Parfitt, and G. R. Harkcr were re-elected delegates to the District Committee, The Trotting Association advised that the stipendiary steward appointed for the galloping would also supervise the trotting events for the club's meeting on June 3. It was decided to make a grant of £2 2s towards the compilation of the annual Turf Register. Mr R. Hatch was voted £2 2s additional to his Starter's fee for the Greymouth races, owing to their postponement. It was decided to instruct the club's handicapper to commence his handicapping of horses at 7st 101b minimum for June S, owing to winter conditions prevailing. Unemployed,

Following the division of funds from the Great Easter Art Union, the funds available for the relief of distress at Greymouth will be increased by £9l, the amounts allocated to the other West Coast towns being: Westport £ll7, Runanga £11,: Reef ton £2B, Brunnerton £lO, Blackball £36, Murchison £l3, Millerton £34, Kumara £6, Karamea £lO, Hokitika £62, and Granity £2O. Election Deposits. The application for the attachment Of the paid by Mr F. L. Turley in t£3 recent Greymouth borough elections has not been proceeded with by Messrs Duncan McLean, Ltd., the judgment creditor. When the application was before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., last week, in chambers, he reserved his decision. Collision. On Saturday evening a collision occurred at the intersection of Raleigh and Cowper streets, Greymouth, between a motor-lorry driven by Alfred Dearing and a motor-car driven by Thomas Waugh, of Gladstbne. Both vehicles were extensively damaged by the Impact. No one was hurt.

Chopping Match. An interesting chopping match was held at Donollie on Saturday afternoon, when 14 axemen took part. After an exciting finish, Hill, of Barrytown, won, with Kelly second and Bellis third. Aeroplanes Arrive. On Saturday an aeroplane, piloted by Mr E. B. Firth, of Auckland, who was accompanied by Mr L. W. Savan, of Auckland, arrived at Hokitika, and shortly afterwards Mr J. C. Mercer arrived by aeroplane from Christchurch. The party motored to Greymouth yesterday, accompanied by Mr J. B. Renton, of Hokitika. They regretted that there was no landing place at Greymouth, and stated that it was likely that other aeroplanes would visit the West Coast from Auckland. Flying conditions were good, the Auckland visitors stated. The party visited Waiho and climbed the Franz Josef ! glacier. A second aeroplane will be added to Hokitika's fleet, Mr H. T. Parry being the owner. -The aeroplane will be a Redwing, a British machine, and will be landed at Lyttelton on June 13. It will be rigged at Christchurch 1 and flown from there (! to Hokitika, fThe visitors expressed the oofnion that an aerodrome at Greymouth would form a useful link for the West Coast service. Labour Conference. A conference of all the West Coast labour organisations wa3 held in Greymouth on Saturday, presided over by Mr John Smeaton, oi Brunner. It was decided to form an organisation to be called the Workers and Labour Movement Protection Association. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr P. O'Farrell; vice-president. Mr, G. E. English; secretary, Miss M. Anderson. Grey Defence Rifle club. The final shoo* for the Ashby Bergh trophy by the Grey Defence Rifle Club took place on Saturday afternoon, when Rifleman C. Richardson was top scorer with 97, J. Prendergast next with 94, and T. Garth next with 91. Rifleman G. Anderson was the winner with 192, S. Ashton being runner-up with 191. The first competitions for the patron's cup was held yesterday, when Rifleman J. Prendergast was top scorer with 98, and G. Roberts runnerup with 97. S. Ashton and C. Richardson were next wtih 95. The following are leading for the championship:—C. Richardson 1140, S. Sharroan 1325. For the championship handicap, - S. Sharman 1153, W. Garth 1152, J. Prendergast 1149, and M. Garth 1148. Association Football. The Westland Football Association held its fixtures on Saturday in perfect weather, with grounds in good order. In the senior competition.

Dobson remains unbeaten, and defeated Taylorville at Taylorville by four goals to three. The scorers for Dobson were W. White (2), Richardson, and Sco'tt, whilst Menzies, Hogarth, and Hall were successful in scoring for Taylorville. At Cobden, Runangaj defeated Cobden by two goals to one, the scorers for Runanga being Win-1 Stanley and Wick, and for Cobden Marley. The game was fast and exciting, play being of a high standard all through. There was a good at-! tendance. In the junior competitions, Greymouth beat Blackball by five to two, Grey thirds beat Technical A byj four to 0, Technical thirds drew with Marist, four all. j Rugby Football. The Rugby Union's fixtures for Saturday were played in beautiful sunshine, with good attendances and fast play the order. At Rugby Park, Cobden defeated United 17 to J2, after a ;J bright, fast, and open game. Blakerf tOym beat Stars 20 to 6, showing some of their old form and giving Stars no cjiances in the first spelj. In the junior grade, Cobden beat Blackball 10 to 0; United beat Cobden B 26 te» 3, Rapahoe and Stars drew 3 all, KUmara beat Blaketown 13 to 11. At Wingham Park, Marist beat Pirates 23 to 2, after a spectacular and open game. Runanga, at Dunollie, defeated Blackball by 19 to 15 after a good exhibition, with flashes of brilliance by both sides. In the junior competition, Marist beat Pirates 12 to 5; Runanga beat Ngahere 11 to 0; Brunner thirds beat Pirates 25, to 15; Marist fourths beat Runanga 25 to 11.
