NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The Mayor oi' Rangiora, Mr W. A. Rowse, presided at the weekly meeting of the executive of the Unemployment Committee yesterday morning. Other members present were Messrs S G. Dalley, C. S. Ayers, J. M. Fraser, J. Wilkinson, and Mr G. E. H. Davis (certifying officer j. A satisfactory reply having been received from an applicant for registration for unemployed relief, the application was granted. Three applications under the No. 4A Scheme were received, two being granted. One was held over for further information. Information was received from the Labour Department that proceedings were to be taken against a farmer for utilising labour under the 4A Scheme contrary to the regulations. j Five new applications were received for relief.

A communication was received from j the board relative to the allocation for | the district. Strong objection was .taken by members to the unsatisfactory amount allocated, and it was decided to enter a strong protest. The committee has not yet received any reply to their protest against the unsatisfactory position in which the local men are to be employed on the Ashley river improvement works. The committee expressed the hope that farmers requiring men for potato picking would apply to the secretary of unemployment, as was the case with harvesters The first of a series of six monthly concerts organised by the Rangiora Band was given on Sunday evening in the Town Hall. A programme of band music and vocal items by local singers was much enjoyed, as were musical items on the xylophone by Mr W. Lintott and party from Kaiapoi. Vocal items were given by Miss N. Shankland, Miss Una Benjes, and Mr Gordon Blake, and a recitation by Miss Gladys Taylor. The Mayor, who is also president of the band, expressed his appreciation for the support given by the public in the past, and" urged the same support during the winter. Those present at an executive meeting of the Rangiora Returned Soldiers' Association on Saturday evening were Mr C. How (president), and Messrs J. W. McLeod, C. Hopkins, F. W. Reynolds, W. Dalzell, E. Ellis, P. Brown, D. Hill, E. Hills, H. Hammond, F. Lowe, E. James, R. A. Scott, and the secretary, F. Hunt. The headquarters of the New Zea-

land Returned Soldiers* Association advised that in the churchyard o£ the Walton Parish Church, which is well known to many former members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, were buried 21 nurses, officers, and men of the New Zealand Forces. Some of the people who had kindly remembrances of New Zealand soldiers desired to perpetuate the memory of those fallen, and it had been suggested that there be erected in the parish church a brass memorial recording their names and details. To erect this tablet would cost £4O, and as it was thought that some former service men or the dependents of some of those who fell might like to contribute towards this tablet. It was decided to forward a donation towards the cost of erecting the tablet. Mr C. Hopkins was appointed to represent the association at the annual conference. An invitation from the Kaiapoi association to attend their annual reunion on Saturday was accepted. The secretary reported that a plantation of pine trees had been purchased at Fernside for the employment for former soldiers in felling the trees for firewood. The wood had all been sold. M,essrs Dalzell, James, and the secretary were authorised to inspect another plantation. The Rev. ; W. R. Hutchison's application for a transfer of membership to 'the Waipukurau association was granted. The amateur sports section of the association forwarded a balance-sheet for the year showing receipts to be £B6 3s Id, and expenditure £94 19s, leaving a debit of £8 15s lid. A recommendation was made from the committee, to be put forward at the next general meeting, that the association continue the amateur sports section.

KAIKOURA. During the absence of Dr. R. L. Withers from Kaikoura, Dr. Dawson will act as his locum tenens. The mission conducted by the Rev. Donald Haultain, at St. Peter's Church, concluded on Sunday, and Mr Haultain returned to Nelson yesterday. The mission was successful from all viewpoints. A dance was held in the Drill Hall on Saturday night under the supervision of the Kaikoura Trotting Club and the Kaikoura Football Club. Music was played by Mr W. Thomas and Mr C. W. Reeves. Extras were played by Misses E. and M. Wareham and Mr E.. Munson. Mr Ivan Gill was master of ceremonies. A number of junior players recently joined the Kaikoura Brass Band, and Mr A. S; Robinson . generously gave a" trophy for the most improved playe*. L. Smith proved the winner with' 39" points. W.-Sabiston was second with 34J points, and Leo Smith third with 34 points. Mr Robinson was thanked for his trophy. A fire occurred at 5 a.m. on Monday at Postman's road, when the residence of Mrs G. Lawson was destroyed, together with the contents. Mrs Lawson escaped in her night attire, everything in the house being destroyed. Dr. Withers had been attending a patient on Athelney road, and noticed the fire. He had Mrs Lawson conveyed to a neighbour's home. No information is available as to insurances. The .following will, represent the Kaikoura Football Club against Cheviot, at Cheviot, on Saturday:—J. CHEVIOT. On Friday evening the Cheviot Basketball Club held a dance in the public hall, which proved very successful. During the evening novelty dances were held, and were won as follows:—Lucky spot waltz, Miss F. M. Orchard and Mr B. Buttle; Monte Carlo, waltz,. Miss E. Williamson and Mr R. McKnight; . Music was supplied by Miss N. Fraser and- Mr C. Ogden, and extras were -played by Mrs E. N. Clarke. Mr C. Morrison was the master of ceremonies. The Cheviot Collie Club has arranged a. very attractive programme for their annual dog trials, which will be held on June 12* 13, and 14. The .programme ■ shows prize money and specials to the value of £IOO 13s, excluding cups and medals for the four events carded. There is a iong special prize list. SCARGILL. Playing, in the Hurunui Rugby Sub-Union's junior grade competition at Scargill on Saturday, the Hanmer team defeated the Scargill team by five points to three J.. CULVERDEN. The Amuri district has not had much rain for some considerable time, and is suffering from a shortage of water I for household purposes. In several j homes around Culverden the wells have dried and owners have had to have them dug deeper, even then not always securing enough water. Several residents have had to carry water. The mountain ranges which were previously covered with snow are now bare, owing to the nor'-west winds early last week. A particularly strong wind blew on Wednesday, and some farmers had the top soil from ploughed paddocks lifted and blown away, especially in the Balmoral district. There is not a great deal of winter feed making its appearance yet and only a small percentage has made any progress. It was decided some time ago, at a meeting held by the Amuri Collie Club, to erect a shelter shed for the competitors on Mr George Hartnell's property. The shelter is now almost completed, and will be ready for the dog trials on June 5, 6, and 7. The Hurunui Hockey Sub-Associa-tion competitions will start on Saturday on the Culverden grounds with an inter-club six-a-side tournament. In the Mount Palm shield competition, which will start on June 3. the Culverden team will play Cheviot on the Cheviot ground. The Culverden Club hopes to secure more players and members before the start o£ the competition. The district Plunkct nurse. Miss Sharp, who is away on annual leave, is being relieved by Miss E. O'Shea, of Ashburton.

Mr R. Sheen, audit inspector of post offices, has completed his inspection in the district and has left for Wellington. Mrs D. Sterritt and family have returned from Gore Bay, where they spent the school vacation. Miss Jean McMillan is at home on vacation. Miss Iris Dalzell has returned home from Gore Bay. Miss E. Chamberlain, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs W. B. McMillan. WAIAU. The iirst of a series of functions to raise funds to repay the loan raised from residents to pay off the debt on the school baths will be held on Wednesday night. During the evening a ballot will be taken to decide which contributors shall be repaid from the proceeds. To raise funds for travelling expenses, the Ladies' Hockey Club held a card party, the proceeds from which amounted to more than £3. On Saturday the junior football team journeyed to Cheviot to meet the Cheviot juniors. The match resulted .in a win for the visiting team by 18 points to 0. The senior team travelled to Kaikoura to play the Kaikoura seniors, the game resulting in a win for Kaikoura by 18 points to 0.

HAWARDEN. At the monthly meeting of The Peaks branch of the Women's Institute, Mrs White presided. The competition resulted: Best pair of slippers out of old material, Mrs Campbell 1, Miss Hewett 2, Mrs Grimwood and Mrs Campbell (equal) 3. Miss Pierce gave two interesting recitations. It was decided to celebrate the first birthday dance early in July. Mrs J. Quigiey was appointed delegate to attend the annual conference in July. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs It. Campbell and Miss Hewett. WAIKARI. Bishop West-Watson . visited Waikari on Sunday and preached at the morning service in the Church of the Ascension on family, life and fellowship in religion. This was the Bishop's first visit to the parish since the Rev. H. M. Cocks Was appointed priest-in-chargc, and he expressed the hope that the finances would soon be improved, so that Mr Cocks could be inducted as vicar. The Bishop will visit Waikari later in the year for a confirmation service. Dr. G. M. L. Lester, of Christchurch, will give an address at the annual meeting of the Waikari branch of the Plunket Society on Wednesday afternoon. At the Waikari sports ground on Saturday afternoon the Culverden junior football team played WaikariHawarden United, the home team winning by 22 points to seven. For United, tries were scored by Marsden, Saundercock, Fitzgibbon, Mander, Cusack, and Quigley; Saundercock and Michael each converted one. For Culverden, H. Harlnell gained a try and ,D. Hartnell kicked a field goal. Mr E. A. Robinson was the referee. At the Football Club's fortnightly dance on Saturday evening, Mr W. P. Honeybone was the master of ceremonies. Music was supplied by Mrs W. Trail, and Messrs G. Marsden, B. Marsden, A. Lowe, and W. Thompson (Nelson). .

OXFORD. The Oxford Women's Christian Temperance Union held a meeting for intercession for world peace in the Coronation Hall, the president being in the chair. A resolution was passed expressing sympathy with the relatives of Mrs A. Aldridge. An address was given by the Rev. A. Ashcroft. Intercessory prayers were offered and an appropriate vocal solo was given by Mrs Whyte. CLARKVILLE. The Clarkville basketball team journeyed to Oxford on Saturday, for a match, which resulted in a win for the visiting team by 19 goals to 12.

AKAROA. ' The results of the Banks Peninsula football competition on Saturday were as follows:—Senior—Eastern Bays 7, Te Kotahitanga 3; United Bays 3, Little River o.'. The junior match, Akaroa v. Little River, was played at Akaroa and was won by the home team 12 to 5. Tries were scored by T. H. Sunckell (2), T. E. Armstrong, and A. L. Hammond for the winners, and B. Stuart scored a try, which was converted by R. Barclay, for the losers. The launch Waimii, which was driven ashore during the storm last week, was refloated on Thursday. The owner, Mr C. W. Hansen, had difficulty in getting the boat back to the water owing to the soft nature of the beach. Two other launches pulled 'the craft into water deep enough to allow floating. Some of the planks were slightly strained, but no severe damage was done. The other launch, Fisher Lassie, owned by Mr J. Pool, was refloated on Saturday. This boat had a remarkable escape, being beached on large rocks near the baths. Only two small patches were required to make her. seaworthy. At the annual meeting of the Akaroa sub-branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society the following officers were elected:—President, the Rev. J. C. McCaw; vice-president, the Rev. H. N. Wright; secretary, Miss B. Jacobson; collectors, • Mesdames T. E. McKenzie and W. B. Ramsay, Misses M. Julius and V. Lelievre.

HALKETT. In the West Melton Hall the members of the Halkett branch of the Plunket Society held the annual -ball. Music was supplied by Jackson's band, and extras were played by Mrs W. McDonald and Miss L. Thompson. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Martin and Mr Stewart,. of Christchurch, and a lucky spot was won by Mrs J. D. Henderson and Mr J. H. Hutton. In the supper room the tables were decorated with vases of chrysanthemums by Miss Trickett, of West Melton. Messrs L. G. Davis and J. H. '.Wilson were the masters of ceremonies.

TAI TAPU. A basketball match was played at Rhodes Park on Saturday afternoon between Tai Tapu and Lincoln teams, the game resulting in a win for Lincoln by 15 goals to five. Miss F. Hamilton was the referee. The Southbridge junior football team visited Tai Tapu on Saturday and played a match against Waihora juniors at Rhodes Park. Waihora won by 11 points to 3. Mr Fleming was the referee. ' . , , Mr Thompson, the newly-appointed headmaster of the Tai Tapu consolidated school, with his wife and family, have taken up their residence in Tai Tapu. The school reopened yesterday after the term holidays. Messrs H. Payne and T. Macartney have returned from a holiday spent on the West Coast. Mrs K. Peryman has been spending a holiday at Sumner. YALDHURST. Miss Ivy Curtis (Yaldhurst) and Mr W. Curtis (Christchurch) left on Saturday on a motor tour to the West Coast. Mrs L. M. Odcll and Miss T. Odell < Yaldhurst). who were the guests of Mrs L. E. Hill, Dunedin, have returned home. . .... A lecture was given in the Yaldhurst schoolroom by the representative of Fertilisers, Ltd., under the auspices of the Yaldhurst branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr J. A. Crawford presiding. Mr Bloomfield, Dominion organiser, also briefly addressed the gathering, explaining the useful work done by the Cawthron Institute. Both lectures were illustrated by a number of lantern slides. The lecturers were accorded a vote of thanks. LINCOLN. The annual tea meeting and evening of the Presbyterian Church >vas held in the hall, and was followed by a concert given by members of St. Andrew's choir (Christchurch). During the evening the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson gave an interesting talk. A vote of appreciation was proposed by the Rev. G. Macßae. At the Saturday night dance and social Mrs Ford and Mr Ede were winners of the competition. The Imperial Band supplied the music for dancing, and Mr P. B. Moran was the master of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Milly Neil and Mr Mitchell. ,

PREBBLETON. The A grade basketball team played Ladbrooks on the Ladbrooks ground on Saturday afternoon, Prebbleton winning the match by 9 goals to 5. Mrs L. Harris was the referee. A friendly match played during the week against a Templeton team at Templeton ended in favour of Prebbleton by 20 goals to 3. Mrs Hubert Jones presided at a meeting of the Anglican Church Social Committee held at the vicarage. Miss Vera While was appointed secretary. Other members present were Mesdames W. Hands, G. Walker, E. Walker, J. Yeatman, W. Downey, H. Prebble, and Miss A. Jones. The committee made arrangements for a social evening, which will be held in the Parish Hall. The proceeds will be devoted to the church funds. A card social was held in the library on Saturday evening in aid of the Public Hall funds. The highest points for the evening were gained by Mrs W. Downey, Mrs W. Kolkman, Mr G. Thompson, and W. Millar.

LITTLE RIVER. Miss J. Wood (Tai Tapu) is the guest of Mrs J. Flynn (Okuti Valley, Little River). Playing in the first round of the Peninsula football competitions on Saturday, at Little River, United Bays senior team defeated Little River senior team by three to 0. Tom Robinson kicked a penalty for United Bays. Te Kotahitansa was defeated by Eastern Bays at Okain's Bay by seven to three. The Little River junior team was also defeated by the Akaroa junior team at Akaroa by 14 to five. The women members of St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Little River, held a luncheon booth in conjunction with the Banks Peninsula collie dog trials, held at Little River on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of last week. The proceeds amounted to approximately £ls. A popular event was held in the Town Hall, Little River, on Friday evening, when the Banks Peninsula Collie Dog Club held the annual dance. Music was .supplied by Radford's orchestra. Mr J. McQueen and Mr C. Barclay were the masters of ceremonies. Among those present were Mesdames S. S. Barclay, T. Brankin, A. Dawber, C. Withers, A. HORORATA. Frosts of 18 degrees on Saturday morning, 11 on Sunday, and 12 yesterday morning, were registered at Hororata. Mrs Moffat has returned to Kirwee after spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs T. D. Jarman, "Heatherlea." Mrs A. J. Harris, who has been spending a short holiday at Heathcote Valley, has returned home. The Sheffield junior football team visited Hororata on Saturday and played a friendly game with the Hororata team, the game resulting in a win for Hororata by five points to three. J. Poison scored a try for Sheffield, and J. Williams for Hororata. L. Wells, jun., converted Hororata's try. Mr L. Wells was the referee. Playing hockey on the Hororata ground on Saturday, Greendale B was defeated by Hororata by eight goals to 0. Goals were shot by A. Wells, M. Fuller, and M. McKenzie. Mr M. Thorne was the referee.. BROOKSIDE. The Brookside branch of the Women's Institute met on Friday, the president, Mrs Jos. Brooks, presiding.

A motion of sympathy was extended to Mrs H. Gardiner in her illness. The competition for the best arranged vase of chrysanthemums resulted: Miss. J. Candy 1, Mrs F. S. Candy 2, Mrs A. Croy 3. Miss G. M. Glanville interested the members in her talk on her visit to England, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The sales table was in charge of Misses A. Hall and E. Taylor, and afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames H. Candy and J. Hight, and Miss Joan Millar.
