Bavin, the general secretary of the Migration Department of the Young Men's Christian Association, has prepared a report on the first six months' working of the "British boys for British farms scheme," which was launched last September. A great deal of knowledge has been gained, he says, about the attitude of the average unemployed urban youth towards taking up work in agriculture, his suitability for it, and the disposition of the average farmer to give the town lad who has been trained for the work a chance to prove himself. All the boys are given a preliminary testing in a hostel. It is only when they have been reconditioned in health and put to work under close supervision that their capacity can be judged. During this period also the boys are able to obtain a clear idea of what lies'ahead of them, and to show whether they are likely to settle down to an agricultural career.
