NO ATTEMPT YET TO REACH TOP. earlier report denied. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BI ELICMIIO telegraph—corraioHT.) I (Received May 19, 9.33 p. m .) 1 CALCUTTA, May 19. There is no truth in the report cabled from India that an attempt to climb Mount Everest failed. The expedition is still in the preparatory stages, and no attempt to reach the top has yet been made. An earlier message stated that according to the "Daily Mail," an at- ™ pt . J? y members of the British Mount Everest expedition to reach the of the mountain had failed. The most recent message before that had been received on Tuesday, when it was reported that on May 5, Mr Hugh Ruttledge, the leader, Dr. Raymond Greene, and Messrs I. A. Brocklebank and Wood-Johnson had joined the advance party, who had already established Camp 3 at 21,000 feet. There was much snow in the glacier trough and a violent wind on the Rongbuk glacier itself. Mr Ruttledge had previously stated that he would not push 011 in the face of the very strong Himalayan winds, as this was prejudicial to the climbers' powers of endurance.
