WEST COAST MINERS' REQUEST.
■ ;■-STATEMENT BY MR BISHOP. (PRES3 ABBOCUTIO* TSUMItIV.) WELLINGTON, May 19. The secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners' Association (Mr T. O. Bishop) said he felt sure the. statement attributed to Mr W. D. HoMgate that trouble was brewing on the West Coast over the coal mines agreement arose from some misunderstanding. Work at all mines belonging to members of the association wfio wore parties to the agreement made wittt the miners in 1832 was being! carried on under the terms at that agreement, which had expired. Some Says ago the secretary of the Miners' District Council wrote suggesting that a conference should be held about the end of this month, at the same time as another conference already arranged about the engtoe-drivewf agreement, to consider the terms o£ employment for a further period. i j There was not the slightest reason I for the belief that any trouble was likely to arise out of these discussions, and he did not think that Mr Hold-
