NORTH CANTERBURY.

Q RANGIORA. Mr G. Gibbs Jordan, who lias been organist at John Knox Church, Rangiora, for the last 12 years, has been appointed organist of the Anglican Church in succession to Mr R. C. Pullar. On Wednesday evening Mr L. E. Clements, a member of the Referees' Association, addressed the members of the North Canterbury Football Club, and the North Canterbury Sub-Union, on the new rules of Rugby. There was a good attendance. "The Champ," starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, to be screened at the Rangiora Town Hall this afternoon and to-night, is a picture with a moral, and has a direct appeal to everyone. On Wednesday night the principal attraction will be "Devil and the Deep," the story . of a woman who found romance on desert sands. Tallulah Bankhead and Gary Cooper take the leading roles.

KAIAPOI. An enjoyable smoke concert was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi, on Thursday evening, when members of the Kaiapoi Working Men's Bowling Club entertained their friends and visitors from Christchurch, including Mr C. J. Morrison (pros'dent) and Messrs H. B. Oakey, A. Rollinson, and W. Healey, of the Christchurch centre. The president (Mr S. J. Richards) proposed the toast of the King. Other toasts honoured were: The Christchurch Centre, proposed by the president and responded to by Messrs C. J. Morrison, H. B. Oakey, A. Rollirtson. and W. Healey; The Visitors, proposed by Mr E. Monk, arid responded to by Mr J. Cooper (president of the Christchurch Working Men's Club), Mr W. G. Wylie (Kaiapoi Bowling Club), and Mr B. HANMER SPRINGS. The Anglican Ladies' Guild held a bring and buy sale in the Hanmer hall on Wednesday afternoon to raise funds to liquidate the debt on the piano in the church home. There was a large attendance, and the various stalls were cleared of the goods liberally given by residents' and others. In the evening a social and dance was held, the music for the dancing being contributed by Miss T. Parsons and Messrs R. O'Loughlin and Basher. Mr A. Waaner was master of ceremonies. Items were contributed by Mrs R. W. Skinner, Misses B. Maher, M. Calder, and M. Martin, Mr D. Stavert, and the vicar, the Rev. G. B. Moore. The guessing competitions were won by Mrs T. Maher (sheep) and Mrs Shrubfall (cake). The vicar referred to the loss the choir had sustained through Miss M. Calder leaving to undergo training in the Christchurch Hospital. He referred to Miss Calder's many good qualities, and wished her success. The result of the day's effort was a credit of £2B. The stall holders were:—Produce, Mrs T. C. Baumfleld; sweets, Misses A. Lahmert and Coleman; white elephant, Mrs M. Walker and helpers; toilet and fancy goods, Miss E. Hodges, and helpers; cake, Mrs H. D. Muir and Miss F. Saunders; kitchen stall, Mesdames J. Wilson and H. Farrow.

CHEVIOT. The annual meeting of the Cheviot Sports Club was held in the public ha]J, Mr A. S. Murray presiding over a good attendance. The balance-sheet stated that the season had begun with a credit balance of £3B. Correspondence was received from the centre advising that a cycling championship would again be allotted to the Cheviot Club. The election of officers resulted: Patrons, Messrs J. Connolly, M.P., R. Sloss, and W. T. Pain; president, Mr A. S. Murray; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Y. Moir, G. H. Harrison, A. Millen, and Jas. Beckett; secretary, Mr A. B. Cockerell; treasurer, Mr J. Y. Moir; auditor, Mr J. N. Cottrell; committee, Messrs D. Kay, E. P. Honeybone, C. E. Powis, A. D. Fleming, E. Winskill, J. N. Cottrell, F. H. Upston, N. R. Wilkinson, Jas. Paton, B. E. Wilkinson, V. E. Barnes, J. Flaherty, W. Petrie, Jas. McAdam, and R. Smart; track committee, Messrs J. Y. Moir, W. T. Pain, A. S. Murray, and D. Kay. It was decided to hold a working beo at the grounds as early in June as possible to reform the cycling track bankings. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs C. Powis and Mr Petrie for their assistance with the cake competition. It was decided to apply to the centre for January 2, 1934, for the next sports meeting. WAIPARA. The annual meeting of the WaiparaOmihi branch of the PJunket Society was held in the Waipara Hall, when uiere was a good attendance of members. The report for the year was read and was considered satisfactory. Dr. Birkenshaw gave an interesting address on the "Origin of the Plunket Work." The following officers were elected; —President, Mrs Campbell (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mrs D. McLachlan, Mrs E. Glennie; secretary, Miss A. Symonds (re-elected); committee, Mrs McGuckin, Mrs Darroch, Mrs L. Doak, Mrs Symonds, and Mrs Stackhouse. The fortnightly social organised by the local Red Cross Society was held on Thursday evening. Prizes were won by Mesdames L. McGuckin, F. Laredo, A. Ferguson, Messrs R. Laredo, E. Whyte, and A. Ferguson. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Ferguson and Mr Watkins, extras being played by Mrs Trail, Misses J. Kilty and M. Whyte. LITTLE RIVER. Mrs J. Palmer, Picton avenue, Riccarton, is the guest of Mrs H. French (Little River). Miss R. Walker .(Aylesbury), who has been the guest of Miss L. Leeder (Little River), returned home yesterday. Miss M. Vaughan (Springfield) is the guest of Mrs E. J. Keenan (Little River). • . , , . . Miss M. Cradock (Christchurch) is spending the school vacation with her parents, Mr and Mrs C. Cradock (Little River).

TEMPLETON. In a friendly game of basketball between Prebblcton and Templeton Old Girls, at the Templeton Domain on Thursday, Prebbleton won after a fast and pleasant game. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. BROOMFIELD. The first of a series of socials was held in the hall, when there was a large attendance. Music for dancing was supplied by Messrs Hall and Watkins (violin and piano), extras being played by Mrs Trail and Mr Mac Donald. Supper was served by the women and Messrs J. C. Croft and J. W. Streeter were the masters of ceremonies. A systematic poisoning of rabbits is at present in progress among the farmers of the Broomfield district. LEESTON. Yesterday afternoon a bazaar to raise funds for the purchase of new instruments for the Ellesmere Brass Band was opened in the Leeston Town Hall, and will be brought to a conclusion this evening. Preparations for the fixture had been in hand for many weeks, and a considerable quantity of produce and other goods was displayed on the stalls. The official opening was performed by Mr J. Connolly, M.P., who complimented the band on its enterprise, and expressed the hope that the financial goal would be reached. A large band of helpers, with Mr J. R. Jackson,' president of the band, as chairman, and Messrs T. F. Owens, and G. A. H. Atkinson as hon. secretary, worked very hard to ensure the success of the effort. There was a very good attendance, especially last night, and business at the stalls and with competitions was very brisk. Those in charge of the stalls were:—Variety, (Leeston Women's Institute), Mesdames T. M. Hollen, F. B. Nansen, and assistants; cakes, Miss Tod, Mrs R. G. Power, Miss R. Bowden, and assistants; soft drinks, Miss V. Curran; bran tub, Miss N. Power; flowers, Mesdames M. Slattery and J. Aiken: refreshments, Miss N. Rourkc and assistants; telegraph office, Messrs Mat Owens and Roy Tucker; grain and produce, Mr A. Shaw and assistants; sideshows, Messrs H. D. Jones and W. J. Ormandy; competitions, Messrs D. Miller and L. Tucker.

SOUTHBRIDGE. Proof of the high regard in which Mr and Mrs W. G. Hannah were held by the people of the SouthbridgeDunsandel Prcsbylerian charge was offered on Thursday evening, when a farewell social was tendered to them before their departure for Knapdale,' Southland. Additional seating accommodation had to be provided in the Church Hall. The Rev. D. N. Pryor, of Leeslon, interim moderator, presided. On behalf of the Southbridge Session, Mr A. McPherson expressed regret that Mr and Mrs Hannah were leaving the district, and said that the relationship between Mr Hannah and the session had always been very cordial. Mr D. G. Wylie expressed similar sentiments on behalf of the management committee. Mr J. A. Mackie for the choir, Mr M. Scott for the young people, Mr Alan Walker for the Dunsandel Bible Class, Mr J. Aldridge for the Dunsandel Church, Mr R. Patterson for Sedgemere, Miss G. Wylie for the Sunday School, the Rev. F. B. Lawrence for the. Methodist Church, Mr H. Schnelle for the Horticultural Society, Mr F. Ro\Vell for the citizens, and the chairman. Mr McPherson presented Mr and, Mrs Hannah with a substantial cheque as tangible proof of the regard in which they were held. Mr and Mrs Hannah both acknowledged the gift and good wishes. Musical and other items were given by the choir, Misses M. Lill and A. Macpherson, Mrs T. H. Bennett, Mrs Claude Davies, Miss Eggelton, Mr A. Goulden, and Mr Pryor. Supper was served by the women. Mrs Hannah was the guest at an afternoon function held in the Church Hall on Thursday, by the Southbridge branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, members and friends filling the room. Musical items were given by Mrs Claude Davies, Mrs W. C. Eggelton, Misses B. Eggelton and N. Beamsley, Mrs T. H. Bennett, Miss Eila Gabbie, and the Busy Bees. Several bouquets were presented to Mrs Hannah, who also received from the branch a case of stainless cutlery, a bread-knife, and a set of carvers. The pesentation was made by Mrs J. Carr, who wished Mrs Hannah health and happiness in her new home at Knapdale. Appreciative references were also made to Mr Hannah's interest in the union. At a large gathering of Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union members and friends at Dunsandel, held in Mrs Hannah's honour, musical items were given by Miss G. Walker, Mrs Sheat, Miss M. Lill, and Mesdames James Walker and H. A. Brown. Competition winners were Mrs Walker, Miss Fulton, and Mrs Caldwell. Mrs R. H. Johnston and Mrs H. A. Brown spoke of the faithful work performed by MA Hannah and the former presented her with a beautiful vase as a parting gift. Mrs Hannah made a suitable acknowledgment and afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs A. E. Stephens and Mrs W. Robertson.
