HEATHCOTE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Heathcote County Council met last night. Present: Crs. C. Flavell j (chairman), W. W. Scarff, W. Kerr, E. Rowse, A. G. Williams, and J. F. Scott. An apology for absence was received from Ci\ F. W. Freeman. As on May 15 the county fund account was in debit £2094 6s 6d; loans at call £4000; Valley sewerage loan, credit. £250; Mount Pleasant electricity, credit, £75 lis 9d. The New Zealand Counties' Association wrote that the counties' conference would open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, in Wellington. Cr. Scarff was appointed the representative of the county, and he and the county clerk were empowered to draw up remits on benalf of the council. The chairman reported having discussed with Mr J. W. Beanland, chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board, the construction of a culvert on Bexley road, and stated that Mr Beanland had considered the matter sympathetically. He thought there was every likelihood that the work would be done. The Christchurch City Council submitted a plan of the proposed conveniences in the vicinity of the Takahe. Cr. Scarff stated that on Thursday an arrangement was arrived at with Cr. J. W. Beanland, of the Christchurch City Council, for tenders to be called for the work next week. Relief Workers' Requests. It was decided to reply to requests from the relief workers in the Mount Pleasant riding as follows:—(1) That, as to men losing work through sickness being allowed to make up the time lost within two weeks, the fore- ' man is to be instructed to give applicants a certificate for presentation to Mr R. T. Bailey, who was the only person authorised to grant such applications; (2) that the request that the men should be paid on the job could not be acceded to; and (3) that the request for allowance for travelling time had been referred to the Unemployment Board, which could not see its way to gic.:t the request. Other Matters. The Aranui Hall Committee wrote thanking the council for assistance towards the relaying of a floor in the Aranui "Hall ana stating that the work had been completed to the satisfaction of the committee. Mr Alan W. Brown wrote asking what the council proposed to do in the matter of compensation for damage done to his wife's dress by tar being sprayed on it by workmen on Aynsley terrace. The matter was referred to the member for the district (Cr. Scott), and it was decided to forward a copy of Mr Brown's letter to the contractors for the work on Aynsley terrace. Authority was given for the tarsealing of Cashmere road from Hackthorne road to the Halswell county boundary. Cr. Scarff said that two coats were to be put on, and the cost was estimated at ljd a square yard.
