POPULAR SWIMMER.
PRESENTATION TO MR D. P. LINDSAY. Mr D; P. Lindsay, the Olympic Games representative swimmer and national champion, who has been ap-. pointed to the staff of the Dannevirke High School, was met by members of swimming and surf bodies- last evening. A presentation of a travelling rug was made by Mr F. D. Kesteven, president of the Taylor's Mistake Surf Club, of which Mr Lindsay has been a member, and Dr. J. P. McQuilkin also handed to Mr Lindsay a gift for Mrs Lindsay. Mr Kesteven, in making the presentation, said that he was pleased for Mr Lindsay's sake that he was going to Dannevirke, but his departure would mean a great loss to surfing and swimming in Canterbury. He extended good wishes to Mr Lindsay for the future. The president of the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association," Mr W. H. Benson, said that by application and determination Mr Lindsay had become a swimmer who had disproved the idea that a good surfer could not be a good competitive swimmer. Men of his type were not only of great use as swimmers, but they were also ornaments in the sport. Although- swimmers were sorry that they were losing Mr Lindsay, they nevertheless were very glad that he had been able to return to his profession. He concluded by wishing Mr Lindsay the best of luck. In the absence of the president of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (Mr S. Hollander), Mr M. E. Lyons expressed gladness that Mr Lindsay had been able to return to" his work as a teacher, but he said that he was very sorry indeed that Canterbury was to lose the best all-round swimmer it had ever had. Mr Lindsay had always been a sportsman and gentleman, and men of his type were very necessary in the profession to which he belonged. Other speakers included Messrs J.' Ballin and 'A. I. Cottrell (Taylor's Mistake Club), C. A. Cooper (New Brighton Surf Club), and V. G. Spiller (North Beach Surf Club). Mr Lindsay replied briefly, expressing his thanks for the kindly references to himself, and for the gifts by which he hoped long to remember his friends in Christchurch.
