CANTERBURY PLAYERS WIN ALL BUT ONE. [THE PEEBS Special Sorvleo.] AUCKLAND, April 18. When the Canterbury College team returns to Christchurch on Friday morning from the university tournament, it will have with it besides the tournament shield itself, shields for athletics, swimming, rowing, and the tennis cup. At the finish of the sporting events to-day the total points were: Canterbury .. . 244 Otygo .. .. 15.i Victoria .. .. 0 Auckland .. .. 8£ It was the tennis finals fought out to-day that gave Canterbury the extra points, all the championships except the women's doubles being secured. The standard of play was exceptionally high. The women's singles resulted in a duel between Miss Marjorie Sherris and Miss Ruth Taylor (Auckland). Miss Sherris, with a powerful drive, took several games off her opponent's service, and though inclined to be patchy in the last two sets, she won the last 6-4. Young played well against Barnett in the final of the men's singles, but the issue was never in doubt, and Barnett could afford to be careless. He took the first two sets. The women's doubles, played between Victoria College teams, gave the victory to the second strings, Misses Gill and Phillips. Barnett and Barrer played brilliantly to win the men's doubles, and the latter partnered Miss Sherris against Miss Taylor and Wilson in the mixed doubles, wiiich was productive of almost flawless tennis. All the ganyts were hotly contested, but the victories in the singles put Canterbury ahead for the tennis cup, which it won from Victoria by 15 points to 10. The tournament ball this evening concluded the programme of events, and the teams leave for the south tomorrow.
