Useful Tasks. Eupator and Nightguard had a close tussle over the final stages of a six furlong gallop taking lmin 16sec, the last three in 39sec. . Jeremy and Sundancer sprinted three furlongs in 37sec. Golden Dart and Robin Hood covered six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec, the former making the better showing. | Red Heckle in Trouble. The first casualty amongst the important candidates for the Easter pro-! gramme at Riccarton is Red Heckle, who has fallen a victim to the effects of galloping on hard ground. One of his front legs filled after his gallop over a mile on Saturday, and it was thought inadvisable to go on with him while the present track conditions continued. It is practically certain therefore that he will be an absentee from next week's meeting. Riders for Great Easter. Some of the riding engagements for the Great Easter Handicap are as follows: —Cricket Bat, A. E. Ellis; Gay Crest, G. Humphries; Great Star, R. Coveny; Irish Lancer, J. Dooley; Merry Peel, L. J. Ellis; Assemble, R. Mackie; Martian Chief, S. Wilson; True Shaft, E. Ludlow; Gustavo, J. W. Jennings; Ranelagh, C. Eastwood; Rebel Song, A. Eastwood. Racing at Amberley. The programme for the Amberley Racing Club's annual meeting to be held on the Amberley racecourse on Saturday, May 6, provides for six galloping and two trotting events. The principal event is the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap, hack conditions, of 130 sovs, over a mile and a quarter. The Brackenfield Handicap, highweight conditions, carries a stake of 80 sovs, and is to be run over a mile. Other races are: Amberley Handicap, of 100 sovs, seven furlongs; Seadown Handicap, hack conditions, of 100 sovs, seven furlongs; and Glasnevin Handicap, of 100 sovs, six furlongs. Nominations for all events will close at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 21, with the secretary, Mr L. W. Harley, at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Scarcity of Riders. There is every indication of a shortage of horsemen for Monday's racing at Riccarton, especially for the highweight events. There are not many horsemen in the district eligible to ride in these races, and it is likely that many owners will have to fall back on flat riders, who, under the rules of racing, will have to carry a penalty of 71b. Visitors to Sydney. Mr A. F. M. Symes, of Hastings, owner of La Moderne, left Auckland for Sydney last week to see his filly race in the A.J.C. St. Leger and other engagements at Randwifk. Mr John Donald, of Westmere stud, Wanganui, whose two-year-old Prestige is a member of J. T. Jamieson's team in Sydney, also left. Mr W. Higgins, of Wellington, and Mr Clive Matthews, of Hamilton, were among other racehorse owners who made the trip. A Good Record. The Diacquenod gelding Speed is proving a very payable proposition just now. He has recently attended six meetings, and has won seven races at them. His winning sequence does not yet appear ended either. Speed is trained by H. Griffith, formerly a jockey and member of a well-known Hastings family. Out of Commission. Mr D. Spence's gelding Sir Drake has been under veterinary treatment for acute soreness for the last few days, and will not be a starter at next week's meeting. ! ELLERSLIE NOTES. YESTERDAY'S GALLOPS. (PSESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, April 11. Beautiful weather prevailed for training work at Ellerslie. The course proper, with the poles 45 feet out from the rails, and the No. 3 grass track were used for fast work. The going was excellent, but there were no particularly fast gallops. On the course proper, Muff was first out, being sent 3ix furlongs, the first two furlongs in 27sec and the full distance in lmin 20 3-ssec. This was a ! useful gallop, as she carried nearly fl-0. Ruling King covered half a mile in 54 3-ssec. He carried a good weight and went comfortably throughout. Wee Pat and Master Brierly were allotted a mile, Kilmuir assisting them over the last six furlongs. They ran the first half-mile in 54sec and the full distance in lmin 47 l-ssec. The firstnamed pair were together at the finish, with Kilmuir several lengths back. The final six furlongs were run in lmin 20 3-ssec. Silver Scorn, ridden by D. O'Connor, was sent a mile from the old post. She ran the first furlong in 14 2-ssec, two furlongs in 26 2-ssec, three furlongs in 40sec, four furlongs in 53 l-ssec, and five furlongs in lmin 5 2-ssee, finishing in lmin 46sec. She did her work in good style, and was not doing her best at any part of the journey. The best eft'ort of the morning was ever six furlongs, registered by Deputy Ruler and Manawhenua in lmin lft 3-ssec. There was nothing between them at the finish, but Deputy Ruler, who had the inside running, was going the better at the end. Psychologist, after beginning smartly, and running the first four ; furlongs in 50 2-ssec, completed the I mile in lmin 46 l-ssec. Owing to the fast pace, he was steadying up at the finish. The hurdler, Prince of Orange, worked alone over a round, which he covered in 2min 13 4-ssec. He finished on well. King Mestor and Supreme Ruler were not doing their best to complete half a mile in 54 2-ssec. The southern two-year-cld, Catalogue, was 'given an easy six furlongs in lmin 28 2-ssec. Chief Cook was going easily beside Mahkill, with Tahae Mea beaten off at the finish of six furlongs in lmin 19 2-ssec. They went fast over the early part, running the first three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. The Champagne Stakes candidate, Princess Doreen, had Inflation as a companion over five furlongs, and beat him by over six lengths. She van the first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec, and completed the course in lmin 4 2-ssec. She did her work impressively. but Inflation disappointed.

Sunny Sky was sent six furlongs in company with Merry Damon, being timed to run the first three in 40sec and the full distance in lmin 21 2-ssec. Sunny Sky was going well within herself at the finish. Merry Damon worked lazily. The Gisborne horses, Aiguille and Lordly Knight trotted and cantered on the sand track. Aiguille experienced a rough trip on the steamer from Gisborne, and got down during the trip, injuring a hock, which is much enlarged. His starting in the Easter Handicap depends on the progress he makes during the next two days. Lordly Knight looks in first-class condition, and is expected to run a great race in the Easter Handicap, but so far no rider has been engaged for him. m

TROTTING NOTES. Reminder. Nominations for the trotting events at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting will close next Wednesday. Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting will close on Thursday of next week, and on the same day acceptances for the Ashburton Trotting Club's autumn meeting will close. Good Response from Owners. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club has received excellent acceptances for the opening day of its Easter fixture, which will be held on Saturday, only 20 horses in the whole card having declined their engagements. In two events the fields have been left intact. Met with Injury. A notable absentee from the Flying Handicap to be decided on- Saturday is Gold Country. When preparing to work yesterday morning he swung his head round suddenly and caught his over-check over the point of the shaft. Rearing up, he was pulled over by the check, and he fell heavily. Although he was not seriously hurt he has stiffened up about the neck and shoulders, and it was thought inadvisable to continue his first day's engagement. Trotting 1 Events at Ambcrley. At the Amberley Racing Club's annual meeting to be held on Saturday, May 6, there will be two trotting events provided. The Kowai Handicap, of 90 sovs, is a 3min 45sec class mile and a half race, aad the Teviotdale Handicap, of half a mile further, carries a stake of 100 sovs and is a smin class. Addington Track Work. The track at Addington was in good order yesterday morning, but was not as fast as it was last Saturday, when some exceptional times were recorded. There was a lot of work completed. A Saddle Worker. Wilma Dillon, in saddle, working alone, covered a mile and a quarter in 2min 50 2-ssec, taking 2min Msec for the final mile and lmin 4 2-ssec for the last four furlongs. He accomplished his task comfortably. Peterwah Trots Well. Denver City, in receipt of a slight start from Peterwah, led the trotter for a mile, which took 2min 15sec, but from there on Peterwah held the upper hand, and he finished with a slight advantage in 2min 49sec. Peterwah again gave a very pleasing display. Very Useful Showing. Aristotle and Harvest Child were companions in a bout over a mile and : a quarter, taking 2min 14 3-ssec for the final mile. Goldfield went the last six furlongs with them, being in front all'the way. The three horses made a good showing. Taxpayer in Good Form. Receiving a start of three lengths from Checkers, Taxpayer maintained a slight advantage all the way of a mile and a half, which took 3min 25 l-ssec to cover, after the first mile had taken 2min 19 4-ssec. Checkers, who had the outside running nearly all the way, went slightly faster. Silver de Oro travelled well over a mile and a quarter in 2min 46sec, the first mile of which was left behind in 2min 12 2-ssec. She continues to do well. Colorado Finishes Well. Arikitoa led Rollo and Colorado over the greater part of a two miles effort, but once the straight was reached Rollo and Colorado drew clear, and, finishing well, Colorado was level with Rollo as the post was passed. Colorado's times were 2min 18 4-ssec for the first mile, 3min 27 4-ssec for the mile and a half, and 4min 31 4-ssec for the full distance. His last mile and a quarter took 2min 48 l-ssec. Easy for Vesuvius. Vesuvius conceded a considerable start to Wilbcr White, but he was not long in decreasing the gap, and he had caught his mate before half the journey had been covered, Vesuvius having taken 2min Msec for that stage. From there on Vesuvius was not troubled to hold the other horse safe, and he recorded 4min 31sec for the complete distance. Over Ten Furlongs. Harvest Child, Rey Direct, and Golden Direct began from the mile and a quarter post in that order, and the leader reached the mile post in 2min 16 3-ssec. In the run to the post Rey Direct finished best, and had a slight advantage from Harvest Child and Golden Direct. Harvest Child's time was 2min 50 2-ssec. Royal Silk, who worked behind this bunch, finished close up. He gave Harvest Child a start of five seconds, and recorded 2min 45 4-ssec. Aversion to Work. Sunny Ducrow, who was supposed to have worked with Denver City and Peterwah, but refused to leave with the others, and Chenwood, who broke up when working with the last-nanifcd two, were later sent on a mile and a quarter mission separately Sunny Ducrow taking 2min 55sec, and Chenwood 2min 51sec. Mountain Dell was near the outside of the track while working a mile and a half in 3min 25sec. Great Author, who worked in behind the earlier batch of W. J. Tomkinson's horses, was going well within himself over two! miles, which he covered in 4miri 40sec.! Has Good Prospects. Garner gave a good exhibition of trotting over a mile and a half, trotting very fast over the concluding quarter. She is in fine order for Saturday's racing. Somerby,, in receipt of a start from Linkman, was in front throughout a two-mile journey, but Linkman had made up a good deal of ground by the time the post was reached in 4min 31sec, the last four furlongs in lmin 6 2-ssec. Smart Mile and a Quarter. Sodium recorded the fastest mile and a quarter of the morning in compassing that distance in 2min 42 2-ssec, the last mile in 2m in 11 l-ssec. In view of that performance it seems strange that his name is missing from the list of acceptances for Saturday. Holly Bank and Te Kinga, starting from the mile and a half post, were picked up at the end of two furlongs by Lilian Bond and Lone Derby, but Lilian Bond tangled and dropped back to last at the end of a further furlong. The mile was reached in 2min Msec, after which Lilian Bond sprinted fast, and was close to Lone Derby with a quarter to go. From there on she was too good for the remainder, and she reached the post first with a slight advantage from Holly Bank, the lastnamed having taken 3min 26 2-ssec for the journey. In the early part, when the pace was not strong, Lilian Bond was inclined to tangle on a couple of occasions, but over the final half-miie she paced in her best style. Desert Maiden gave Stanley T. a start of three seconds, which she was not long in recovering, and over the final stages of their mile and a half journey she was too good for the trotter, who recorded 3min 23 l-ssec for the distance. • Resound acted as pacemaker to Belle Lorrimer and Dolores for more than ten furlongs of a mile and a half journey, but the older members finished better to head Resound in the run to the post. The last half-mile was covered in lmin 6 4-ssec, and the distance in 3min 28sec. Woods' Great Peppermint Care. For Influenza Colds. —4

The annual meeting of the Brackenfield Hunt Club was held yesterday, afternoon. The master of the hunt, Mr Dennis Chapman, presided. The report and balance-sheet stated that during the last season the club had experienced some of Its coldest and worst hunting days, and consequently the packs did not put up a big tally of kills. Quite good fields turned out to the meets. The best turn out of the season was at Mr G. Frizzell's Swannanoa. The club acknowledged £75 from the Banks Peninsula Racing Club and £2O from the Canterbury Jockey Club. Six horses qualified during the season, and taking them all round they were useful and clean jumpers. The balance-sheet showed receipts £353 5s lid, and expenditure £233 10s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £ll9 15s 2d. Messrs R. Kirk and W. C. Prosser were elected members, and the election of officers resulted as follows:—Master, Mr D. Chapman (re-elected); committee, Messrs F. McQuillan, A. J. Tutton, J. D. Starky, R. Macdonald, S. Wright, H. Waring, R. C. Chapman, L, R. C. Macfarlane, M. Johnston, G. E. March, W. C. Prosser, and Mrs H. T. Little; huntsman, Mr R. A. Ferguson; honorary secretary, Mr L. W. Harley; auditor, Mr C. I. Jennings; Ladies' Committee, Mesdames D. Chapman, J. B. Starky, S. Wright, G. March. A. J. Tutton, J. Kinley, Miss Norton, Miss Henderson, Miss D. Tutton, Miss E. G. Mac Donald. The appointment of whip was left to the huntsman.

It was decided to commence the hunts at 12 o'clock sharp, and to open the season on May 20.
