HOSPITAL BOARD.

INCREASE IN CITY'S REPRESENTATION. COUNCIL'S EFFORTS RENEWED. — The action of the Finance Committee in forwarding to the Minister for Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) a further emphatic protest against delay in the adjustment of the city's representation on the North Canterbury Hospital Board was endorsed by the Christchurch City Council at its meeting last night. The committee reported that a letter had been received from the Minister advising that after further consideration it had been decided to defer amendment of the representation of local authority districts on the board until the necessity for holding a special election could be avoided. , , ~ The letter explained that as the number of members on the board was at the maximum fixed by section 13 (3) of the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act, lwb. namely, 20, an additional representative could not be given the city until one representative was taken away from another local authority district or combined district.

Position of Amuri. The Minister stated that the one district which it appeared should drop a representative was the Amuri county, which had only one representative. If this county was not to be disfranchised steps would have to be taken to combine it with neighbouring counties, and to hold a special election of a representative of the new combined district. The expense of this special election did not appear to be warranted, and it was proposed, therefore, to hold over consideration of the alteration of the city's representation on the Hospital Board until just before the elections to be held in 1935, in which year the ordinary county elections were also to be held. The committee reported having again written to the Minister lodging an emphatic protest against further delay in the adjustment of the city representation and asking that the necessary alteration be made to enable one or more representatives to be appointed for the ensuing term of office. The report was adopted.
