NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. At the close of the choir practice recently Miss C. Nelmes, who has been a member of the Methodist Church choir for a number of years, was entertained. A games competition was won by the guest. Mr A. Lane, the choirmaster, spoke of the faithful services of Miss Nelmes as the librarian. On behalf of the members Miss Nelmes was presented with a silver cake basket and a crystal honey jar. Miss Nelmes, who is to be married shortly, will take up h'er new home in the south. The annual reunion of the members of the Rangiora branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held on Saturday evening. Mr J. W. MacLeod was in the chair. Representatives were present from the Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Amberley, and Oxford Associations. The Mayor, Mr W. Rowse. Councillors R. R. Gillanders, R. Mcintosh, and J. A. Ivory were also present. A Rangiora orchestra, with Mr A. G. Hunnibell at the piano, provided music, and there was also an excellent programme of vocal items and recitations by Christchurch performers, including songs by Messrs T. Richard, J. Walden, and W. Bell, dancing by Messrs Rex Foster and E. Hegan, and recitations by Messrs C. J. Lawrenson and J. Bush, a trombone solo by Mr E. Pollock, and a cornet solo by Mr Cox. The president of the Christchurch Association, in a short address, gave some very interesting figures on the work of the association, the increased interest taken by returned soldiers, and the increase in membership throughout the Dominion, which had now reached 15,000. He congratulated the Rangiora Association on an increased membership and on the interest taken in its affairs. KAIKOURA. At the annual meeting of the Rover Basketball Club, Miss K. Smith occupied the chair. The report and bal-ance-sheet, showing a credit balance of approximately £5, were adopted. The following ofliccrs were elected:— Patron, Mr H. Crampton; president. Mrs T. J. Boyd; vice-presidenst: Mesdames F. Smith, R. Parsons, C. Clemett, R. Mounsey, J. Schroedcr, R. Register, and Messrs A. B. Clark, W. A. Nelson, and F. Hay ward; committee, Misses K. Smith, S. Clemett; club captains, Misses V. Boyd and K. Smith. The appointment of a coach was left to a later meeting. It was decided to affiliate with the Marlborough Centre. The opening was fixed for April 29, on the Suburban ground. CULVERDEN.

At the annual meeting of the Culverden Football Club, Mr W. J. McMillan was in the chair. The Club decided to open the season on April 22, and to enter a senior and junior team in the Hurunui Sub-Union competitions. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane; president, Mr W. J. McMillan; vice-presidents, last year's list was adopted, with the addition of Messrs F. G. Gordon. G. W. Wade, F. McLoughlin, P. Hadley, and R. Davison; selectors, senior team, Mr S. Maxwell; junior team, Mr B. Macdonald; secreatry and treasurer, Mr A. F. C. Hern; auditor, Mr H. M. Searle; coach, Mr F. Wilson; delegates to the Hurunui Sub-Union, Messrs W. V. Mockett and S. Maxwell. The Culverden Men's Miniature Rifle Club held its annual general meeting in the Culverden Hall. Mr D. Dalzell was in the chair. The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of a little over £6. The following officers were elected:—Patron, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes; president, Mr D. T. Kingsbury. WAIAU. At the annual meeting of the Waiau Ladies' Hockey Club, Mrs J. Gibson presided. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet showed the club to be in a satisfactory position, the credit balance being £ll Os 4d. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: — Patron, Mrs P. Morse; president, Mr A. H. Baker; vice-presidents, Mesdames C. Cone, G. White, R. Crampton, H. Menere, P. R. Dunbar, Misses Bathgate, Beaven, and Messrs R. Bean. H. T. Knight, and G. W. Aldridge; coach, Mr P. Creed; treasurer, Miss Thompson; secretary, Miss A. Derrett; delegates to Hurunui Sub-Association. Messrs A. H. Baker and P. Creed; selectors, Mrs J. Gibson, the coach and the captain; grounds committee, Messrs R. Thompson, P. Creed, and J. Menere. It was decided to arrange a friendly match with the Rotherham Club for the opening day on April 15. LITTLE RIVER. Constable P. Fallon, of Little River, has been notified of his transfer to Darfleld. A successful euchre party and dance was held in the Triangle Hall by the combined tennis clubs, to raise funds for the Easter tennis tournament. A voluntary orchestra, consisting of Miss Dorreen Giddens (piano), Mr A. Radford (violin), Mr A. Baines (saxophone), Mr L. Joblin (cornet), and Mr C. Steans (flute), supplied the music. Extras were played by Miss W. Stott. Songs were given by Miss Margaret Keenan. The winners of the euchre were—Women, Miss M. Mould 1, Miss Brankin 2. Men, Mr H. Reddie 1, Mr R. Barclay 2. SOUTHBRIDGE. To aid the funds of the school dental clinic a bazaar was held in the High School grounds at Southbridge. Members of the school committees in t neighbouring districts interested in the clinic and the residents gave the function strong support. The official opening was performed by Mr J. Connolly, M.P., who was introduced by Mr A. McPherson, chairman of the committee. Mr Connolly congratulated the committee on the good display made. He said that in the present difficult times actions of the nature of the fair were greatly appreciated by the Government. Stalls were in charge of the following:— Catos: Mesdames W. G. Hill and H. G. Hubbard: produce: Mesdames R. J. Parkin, R. G. Bishop, and C. H. Morton; bran tub: Mesdames J. McClure and A. Spicer; variety Mesdames T. H. Bennett, G. B. Couch, E. F. Davison, and G. MdLachlan; sweets: Mesdames W. C. Eggleton, F. H. Mcllraith, and Miss G. Greenwood; ice cream: Mesdames C. ~. Wilson, A. J. Inwood, and H. J. Greenwood; afternoon tea: Mrs M. Home and assistants. The Ellesmere Brass Band attended.
