BROADCASTING.

TO THE EDITOR OF THK tBESS. Sir, —One constantly hears listeners remarking how pleased they would be if some of these B stations received their license fees instead of the A stations. There is no doubt that the services from the big stations have gradually got worse since the Radio Broadcasting Board took over control, and "Ariel" in his weekly notes only recently said in reference to them:— "I can seriously say that I have heard singing from our YA stations that it would be impossible to equal in any other part of the civilised world for sheer badness; I have heard pianoforte playing that could be improved on by a child of nine, and I have heard orchestras that are a travesty of the real thing." I quite agree with that writer's remarks, which will be generally endorsed. We are promised a new station on Banks Peninsula, but I would like to enquire what is the matter with the present 3YA station, the power of which has always been satisfactory? Also, where is the money coming from to provide for this new and unnecessary station and the other promised improvements at Dunedin and Auckland? It is not the Christchurch, Dunedin, or Auckland stations which require alteration at the expense of thousands of pounds, but the Wellington one, which, for fading, distortion, and general dissatisfaction, is the worst of the lot—in fact, night after night not worth bothering about or listening to. Every man in the street knows that. What is the board going to do about that station?— Yours, etc., M.A.C. April 7. 1933.
