HOUSES WRECKED.
SIX KILLED BY EXPLOSION. LONDON, March 27. ** Six were killed and 17 injured by an explosion at Gateshead, which is believed to have been caused by a steam excavator in a roadway damaging a gas main. Two houses collapsed, burying two families. The adjoining premises were wrecked. Fire followed, and many of the injured were seriously burned. The rescuers worked at great risk, because of falls of red hot bricks. William Hood, a relative of some of the victims, was himself injured when he climbed the ruins and fixed a rope to a tottering chimneystack, which he felled safely. William Devonport, aged 67, was pinned under some beams, and successfully protected his baby granddaughter for an hour until he was rescued. He staggered out carrying the child, but then collapsed and died.
