PLEASANT POINT DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
The monthly meeting of the; District High School Committee was attended by the following members:—Mrs Taylor, .Miss Kinic, and Messrs \V. B. Oborn (chairman), \Y. liulkett, C. I'ont, J. Davison, and G. \V. Wakefield (honorary secretary), and Bcnham.The- chairman welcomed the new headmaster, i\lr J. J. McGujgan. Reporting upon the annual sports gathering, the chairman said that it had been excellently organised and conducted under the management of the sports master, Mr MalcoJmson, and hit; assistants. Every event had been got off satisfactorily, tho programme being quite the best in the school's history. It was decided to congratulate the controller and his officials. Correspondence was received from the dental nurse. The chairman said that enquiries had been made by some of tho surrounding schools about the possibility of their availing themselves r:f the dental treatment at Pleasant Point sub-clinic. He had made enquiries as to the probable cost of a room 12ft by 12ft, to replace the dentnl room destroyed in. the recent fire. Tho cost would be about £BO. After discussion, it was decided to carry on with the temporary premises in the meantime. .Members considered that tbey were very suitable. Correspondence was received from .Mr T. I). Burnett, M.P., and the Education Board, about the rebuilding of the school buildings destroyed by fire. Tho chairman said that the outcome was very satisfactory. He understood that it was very largely as a result of tho rcprtseutations of their member, that the grant for rebuilding had been sanctioned, and the board had made very commendable haste, as a start had already been made with the building. On the motion of the chairman, seconded hv Dr. Benham. it was unanimously decided to thank Mr Burnett for his efforts. Referring lo the representations of the committee, supported by the Women's Institute, the chairman said that there were hopes of the appointment being made of a dressmaking teacher for one dav a week. Negotiations were proceeding, which, it was hoped, would have a satisfactory conclusion. The first report of the headmaster, .Mr J. J. McOuigan. showed that he had taken nn his duties on March 1. The staff enthusiasm and general tone have been found very good. The average prima rv department attendance had been 134.3. out of a roll of 140. Tho secondary department attendance had been <1«, out of a roll of 49. Mrs Tavlor, as visitor-for the month, reported that she had found conditions satisfactory. The shrubbery was in u"ed of attention, as it was over grown with weeds. The playground grass could be cut also. Mr Halkett was appointed visitor for March-April. The chairman reminded members that nevt meeting would be the last before the annual householders' meetAccounts amounting l-o £ll 18s lid were passed for payment.
