SUNDAY TENNIS IN AUCKLAND.
EDUCATION BOARD LEASES SCHOOL SITE. [THE PRESS Special Kenrtee.] AUCKLAND, March 15. Sunday play on the tennis courts under its control was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board. An application was received from the, Mercer Tennis Club for the lease of a portion of the Mercer school site. The chairman of the board, Mr T. U. Wells, said that Sunday play on the courts directly under the control of the board was illegal, but if a lease was entered into, the position would be different. Mr E. C. Banks: It iB the thin edge of the wedge. Mr It. Hoe said that the board should keep in step with-the times." Mr P. A. Snell said many of the local body members who were most strongly opposed to Sunday tennis were seen on the golf course on Sundays. A motion to grant a lease on a yearly basis; was carried by six votes to four.
