ASHBURTON. ECONOMY COMMITTEE. Consideration was given to ways and means of further reducing expenditure auring the difficult times through which the primary producers are passing, by the .Ashburtpn County* Council, whielf sat as an economy committee yesterday. A number of recommendations were made, and after these are approved at the next meeting of the council they will be brought into fqrce during the cpming year. The proceedings were taken in committee. Reference was i|iade to the responsibility of the council in sending workmen to fight outbreaks of fire on private properties. It was resolved to instruct the council's officers that in the event of a request for assistance an officer in charge of four men could assist, £nd if the council's property was? threatened more men could be sent outMount Somers Railway Line. The railway time-table for the Mount Somers lino will be altered from Monday, when trains will be delayed to give better service to farmers in the district. The trains will run on the same days, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, but they will not leave Ashburton until 0.45 a.m., arriving at Bpringburn at 11.45 a.m. They will leave Springburn again at 12.25 p.m., and reach Ashburton at 3.4 p.m. Magistrate's Goiirt.

She was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months, on a charge of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. W. J. A. Wood was fined 15s and costs JOs, for driving a motor-cycle without a license and was fined 10s trad costs 10b for failing to give way to traffic on the right. For riding ciycles at night without a light the following were fined 10s and costs 10s:—James E. Fotheiingham, Stanley Ross, M. Gale, Duncan Menzies, Patrick McGinn, William Reid, Harry Dicfcwm, E. Kirkman, Steve Leonard, and Percy Morrison. On* a similar charge, Dulcie Milyard was fined 10s and 12s costs, Jack Ede was fined 10s and costs 3s, and A. Spliluter was fined 5s and costs 3s.

A fine of 20s and costs' 12s was imposed on J. H. Molland for failing to give way to traffic on his right. Molland was fined a further spm of 5« and costs 10s for driving a car without a license. War Belief Fund. " The committee of the Ashburton War Relief Fund met on Thursday evenings Mr E. H. Orr presiding. Ten applications for assistance were received, five being granted, some of the remainder declined and others held over for investigation. Boxing Association: A meeting of the General. Committee of the Ashburton Boxing Association was held on Thursday evening, when Mr J. B. Cullen presided. The New Zealand Boxing Council wrote regretting that it was not in & position to make any grant towards the expenses incurred in sending Competitors to the last New Zealand championships. An application from Stan Brookes for a contest with Tommy Griffiths or JackCrowley was declined. A statement of the finances was presented and the opinion was expressed that- failing prompt payment of outstanding subscriptions the committee should consider taking legal .action for recovery. Rubbish Fire. A fire which broke out in sonie rubbish at the back of tho house pf Mr C. Jaiue, Chalmers avenue, atH;l,s yesterday morning, necessitated tho assistance of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade to quell it. No damage was done.

The New Zealand Crown Tenants Association wrote asking for particulars as to how tenants an Education Board reserves could obtain reductions in rent. The president explained that the Land Board h&4 not power %o 4 e »l with those tenants, whose applications had to be sent to Wellington, but wogld #»ftlly conip b&ck to the L»n4 Board. Ha felt sure they would eventually obtain reductions ranging from 25 to £0 per cent. It was decided to reply i# these terms. The New Zealand Crown Tenants' Association al!30 forwarded for endorsement a resolution, which it had carried, to -the effect that as the passing of the Bank Indemnity and Sales Tax Bills had increased the cost of living to farmers by 20 per eent., the Minister for Lands be requested to increase the living allowance to all Crown tenants by at least 20 per cent. The resolution was approved. The suggestion that after harvest the Commissioner of Crown pands should be invited to visit Ashburton to consider the qijestipn of living allowances snd other matters was made by Mr .1. H, Robertson. He said the position would be serious during the winter. Mr B.
