AUTOMATIC TRAIN SHUNTING.

4> I NEW ROBOT SIDINGS. . lUHITKD rREBS ASSOCIATION—BI EMCCTRIO TBLBORAJH— COrriUGHT.) LONDON, February 22. Robot railway sorting sidings, which are the second biggest in the world, were opened by the London and North Eastern Eailway at March, Cambridgeshire. The sidings are able to accommodate 10,500 trucks and vans. They are drawn to the top of a hump, where they are controlled by a switchman in a central tower. The waggons then free-wheel down the hump into their appointed sidings, being sorted by automatic controls with the assistance of electromagnetic rail brakes. One hundred men, working many hours, were employed to do the work a few men are able to do in as many minutes, using the latest robot, which can shunt 60 waggons into their respective sidings in six minutes.
