ROADS THAT SKID.
ENGLISH INVESTIGATIONS. The National Physical Laboratory (.England) is investigating the possibility of devising apparatus to ascertain accurately the "skiddy" characteristics of a road. . She device employed for the purpose is a motor-cycle and sidecar' with a wheel adjustable to any angle to the direction of travel. This vehicle contains apparatus which records automatically the sideway thrust forces and enables them to be correlated with the slipperiness of the road surface. Motor traffic has directed the tendency of road-makers all over the world to smooth surfaces, excellent for travelling on in dry weather, but not so safe in heavy ram. The efforts of the laboratory will no doubt be concentrated on removing the "skiddy" characteristics without marring the surface.
The lubrication of thfl spring leaves is best done by spraying with a "penetrating graphite." There is some difference of opinion as to the advisability of lubricating _ the leaveß, especially of the front springs.
