WEIGHT OF CAR.

POINT FOR WOMAN PURCHASER. When considering the purchase ot a car, many women will do well to give a thought to the weight of the vehicle. . . * „_ v Weight tells against a woman very quickly; yet rarely does one LearJJ Woman ask, when considering a new car, "How much does the spare wheel weigh?" The joy of ownership will be robbed of much of its pleasure should the car prove heavy to drive or the movable parts too weighty to lift wim ease- ' . „ „„ a In spite of the increasing excellence of tyres, bursts' and punctures still occur, and when.a woman ia faced with the task of changing a wheel the question of weight immediately presents itself. First of all, the car has to be jacked up, which, with a car weighing anything over a ton, is.a jo" demanding a good deal of strength, so that a really powerful and effective jack is a necessity—one that will . lift the maximum amount of weight with the expenditure of the minimum amount of'energy. Nest the weight of the spare wheel itself has to be considered. Obviously the wheels on a "bal>y" car will be lighter than those of a full-sized vehicle, but weights of wheels of the same size also vary. Spare wheels which are located on the running board are easier to on and off than those which are supported on a spindle at the back ot tne car Where the spare wheel is carried in'this way, and a trough is provided to take the weight,, the situation is eased considerably, but without such support it is necessary often to res* the wheel on one's knee if it is ever to be lifted into position, and on a muddy day this has a disastrous effect on clothes. There are so many excellent cars on the market to-day that the held or choice is a very wide one, and the woman will be wise who chooses a car that will not overtax her strength to drive, manipulate, and maintain.

i REMOVING THE SUMP. ! The external surface of -the sump •usually becomes coated with a combination of oil and road grit, thus removal of the sump for internal cleaning is apt to be a somewhat messy business. If, however, the whole surface and all the bolt heads be sprayed liberally with paraffin oil a few hours before tackling the job, it will be found that the dirt can be removed quite easily and with a minimum of mess. An atomiser of the ordinary household type will be found effective in this connexion.
