WOOL SALE.

DECLINE IN PRICES. CROSSBREDS IN POOR DEMAND. The third Christchurch sale of the j •eason, which was held yesterday, was' disappointing to vendors, although it was quite up to the expectations of buyers holding foreign commissions. Prices showed an easing in practically all classes, equal to a penny per lb compared with the preceding sale held a month ago. At the latter sale some inspiration was given the market by the increase a day or so previously in the exchange rate, but there was a natural improvement apart from the exchange. The two • factors were responsible for au advance of 12<1 to over 2d per lb compared with the first sale of the year. The condition of the wool yesterday « was much below the standard of the preceding sale. It comprised for the most part late shorn high country clips, heavy in condition, and of less attractive quality generally. The difference in the quality and condition represented about a penny per lb, bnt there was an easing of a penny apart from this for all fleece wools. A big quantity of halfbred fleece sold at near 9d per lb yesterday which would have exceeded lOd at the January sale. Pieces were an exception, there being very animated competition for these, with the market only a moderate degree easier than at the preceding sale. Lifeless Sale for Crossbred. The fleece wools most affected were crossbred, of whieh there was a larger proportion than usual forward. These were down a full penny on the January sale, and a considerable proportion of them sold at a bare 3d per lb, with only occasional lots exceeding 4Jd. Two or three bids as a rale, finished the competition for them. Not infrequently pieces 'sold as well as the fleece in some clips, a feature ' that was not absent from the sale of fine wools. Bradford Competition Prominent. A big weight of wool was, bought by Bradford representatives. "There was some buying for Japan, but at least one Continental outlet was less prominent. ■ It is suggested that the political unrest was responsible for this development. ', French and Belgian buyers competed briskly throughout, particularly for ! piece lots, in the fellmongering process of which cheap labour gives these countries an advantage. One local fellmongering firm took a substantial weight of pieces. One or two local mills secured a moderate proportion of super wools, but the participation of the local trade was less goneral than usual. The Catalogue. ■ The following were the individual catalogues and the order of sale: — Bales. Pyne, Gould,-Guinness, Ltd. ..' 7,279 N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. -. 2,022 H. It was apparent early in the sale that buyers Were operating uhder reduced limits, there being a marked absence of the elasticity apparent at the preceding sale. Pieces may be excepted from thin comment. Tor these buyers thowed a refreshing keenness, to out* bid one another and quite a number of 'lots sold in the vicinity of 9d per lb. . ''Top price- at the sale was 13id for 11 ioajea of super Corriedale. ewe of the Lummermoor clip; secured in the second catalogue. The selection was rather a poor one and contained a large proportion of back-country wools, which were mainly sandy and, discoloured. There was also a bigger proportion of' coarse wools than in the previous sales of this sea son. Bidding was fairly keen at the lower range of values, the main competition coming from Bradford, France, and Japan. About 90 per cent, of the offering was sold at auction.
