SEARCH FOE CANDIDATE. CONTEST SAID TO BE PROBABLE. As far as can bo ascertained at present, the selection of a candidate for the Mayoralty of Christchurch by tho Citizens' Association is still unsettled, but there is still a possibility thnt at tho general meeting of members of the association, to be hold "shortly, the nominations committee may submit a recommendation. Sonto 'of the persons suggested as probable candidates on tho association's ticket my a correspondent whoso letter appeared in jestcrday's issue of "The Press" have been approached already and asked to consent to nomination, and have given' definite replies in-the negative. These include Air William Hayward and Crs. J. W. Beanland and E. H. Andrews. Mr Hayward expressed the opinion several weeks ago that some of the association's representatives on the council, in view of their long service, should be nominated. Or. Bean land intends taking a trip outside the Dominion, and Cr. Andrews has private reasons foj" declining nomination. Jlecontly Sir Heaton iOiodes was approached by representatives of tho association, but on the counsel of his medical adviser, Sir Heaton Jlhodes declined their request. •Statements are in circulation that even if the association does not nominate a candidate for the Mayoralty, the present occupant of tho office is not likely to have a walk-over. Dr. H. T. J. Thncker, a former Mayor, and Mr L. C. Walker, who unsuccessfully contested tho Christchurch North seat at the latest Parliamentary general ©lections, are still being spoken of as probable candidates. The general meeting of members of tho Citizens' Association to consider the recommendations of the nominations committee is to bo held on March 6. .
