Tho following were fined 10s and costs for failing to pay tram fares: —Martha Caroline Jones, Sehvyn George Maynard, Norman Stewart, Jack Wernham. Gladys Lydia Hill, for the same offence,. wbb convicted and ordered to pay costs 10s. BUILDINU WITHOUT PERMIT. Thomas Joseph Sleeman was fined £2 and costs for beginning to alter an existing building without permission from the City Council. . TRAFFIC CASES. Charles Gatehouse was' fined 10s : and costs for proceeding ogninfst an automatic traffic signal. He made a voluntary appearance. James Low, who made a voluntary appearance, was fined £2 and costs for driving a motor-cycle at a speed dangerous to the public. For the same offence Gertrude MoLure was fined 30s and costs, and William Roberts was fined £2 and costs. STOLE A CHEQUE. William Clarence Carroll, aged 21, was charged that on February 20, at Christchurch, he stole a cheque for £5 18s 2d,

the property of John McGillivray. He elected to bo dealt with summarily. Senior-Sergeant J. Fox said that accused, who had been employed by a farmer, had' : reoeived notice of dismissal, and on the , same morning, after collecting gome mail for his employer, had taken a cheque out of one of the letters and cashed It. He had been in trouble before. Accused was sent to the Borstal for a year. . * . KAIAPGI. (Before Mr E. D. 1/fosley, S.M.) Rau Barrett, charged with .driving a horse and gig without lights, was convicted and fined 10s and costs. Charged with driving motor-cars at a speed dangerous to the public, H. <J. D. van Asch and l>. E. Ciimio were each fined £2 and COEtS. li. B. Hellaby, similarly charged, -was fined £1 and costs. For overtaking another car on an intersection, G. S.Radley was fined 6s and costs. William Crane, charged with • disobedience of a maintenance order, being in arrears £l3 Ills, was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment, to 'be released on payment of £l3 'lSs. PRISONERS SENTENCED. (raisss ASSociiTioK tsleoram.) HAMILTON, February 22. With a long list of previous convictions, Frances Halligan (35) was found guilty in the Supreme Court to-day, of theft, from a dwelling and sentenced to one year's imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by reformative, detention not exceeding throe years. On 14 charges of stealing articles from postal packages, William Henry Matthew Donovan (25) was sentenced to six months' imprisonment #ith hard labour. CONSPIRATORS SENTENCED. AUCKLAND, February 22. Raymond Francis Grlgg (37), an electrician, and David Me Arthur Todd (46), were sentenced to-day for conspiring to commit a crime by threatening, with intent to extort from Frederick Edwards, a chemist, a formula, to accuse him of having committed a crime. Grigg was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, and Todd to 18 months', with hard labour. ' GISBORNE SESSIONS. GISBOBNE, February 22. At tne Supreme Court to-day, Frederick Higgs, charged with assault with intent to commit rape and indecent assault, was found not guilty on "both ohaiges and discharged. Stating he would give, full effect to the jury's recommendation for leniency, Mr Justice Blair placed Kurei Kingi (IS) on three , years' probation for indecent assault on a Maori girl.
