COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIMAIRI. The Waimairi County Council met last evening. Present: Crs. T. 0. Newnham (chair-, man), C. E. Csoss, W. J.' ; Walter, F. 8. Scott, 0. W. Moore, W. G: Chapman, G. Gardner, J.'. Liggins,- W. Price, and W. P. Spencer. The chairman said that an interview- had been hold with the officer in charge of the Labour Department (Mr R. T. Bailey), and all the difficulties in connexion with the No. 5 Scheme had been removed. The North Beach Pa-ogress League .wrote asking the council to assist in an endeavour to* have Travis road arid Francis street declared secondary highway*, and to have them tar scaled so as to link up with the present tar sealed road at.Burwood and with the recently sealed portion of Rook wood avenue. Cr. Walker said several attempts had been made in this direction, but the Highways Board had declined to accept -the responsibility. Crs. Liggins and Walter were appointed a sub-committee to,, meet the New Brighton Borough Council in'regard to the future mater tenance of Racecourse road. A letter was received from the 'City' Count cil accepting the invitation to play a cricket match. Crs. Chapman a"nd Walter Were appointed to make arrangements. Northcote Settlement. The State Advances , -Department advised that a branch office had been opened in Christchurch, and that arrangements had been made for the branch manager to'. exercise direct supervision of the Northcote Settlement. Cr. Walter said something should be done. There were only 20 out of these 52 fine houses oecupied. He considered the prices were too high. The houses were getting into disrepair when there were, scores of families in' Christchurch without.houses,* The City Council wrote drawing attention to the danger' from-fire to the Bottle Lake plantations, and stated that the Director "of State Forests had suggested that the &re hazard would be lessened if Racecourse road, between Rothsay and Hayders roads, part of the Bottle Lake road, and Hayders • road,. from Brooklauds, road to the JSeplanade, Were closed subject to. right of usage by owners of adjoining propertjjjs. Crs. Waiter, Spencer, and the chairman were .appointed to meet representatives of' the City Council on the ground.
