STEAMERS WITHOUT FUNNELS.
♦ RECOVERY OF WASTE HEAT. trsou OUB UIVK COiiESruSOBHT.) ' LONDON, January 3. A des'Tiptiou is included in the annual review number of the "Shipbuilding and Shipping Record" of a new system or waste-heat recovery in steamships now being introduced by James Howdcn and Co., Limited, iii collaboration with Mr John Johnson, who hr.3 been prominently identified with the construction and operation of a variety oi modern steam installations. The object which has been kept in view is the utilisation not only of the sensible beat, but also of the latent heat of the moisture in the waste gases, which is accomplished by proviJino- arrangements for washing the gases and extracting the heat by means of the washing water. Consequently, it is held to be unnecessary to retain tho funnel for the disposal of the clean cooled gases, which can be discharged through the sides of the ship, leaving the architecture of the upper part of the vessel to be designed without regard to the restrictions which hitherto have been imposed by the uptake casings. Thus, with this system, steamf?hir>? may be designed without funnels. PORT OF TIMARU.
