HAREWOOD CLUB. A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. The tenth annual report of the Marewood Golf Club states that besides general maintenance extensive alterations and improvements nave been carried out during the year 4 ana the work has proved very successful. Aided by the satisfactory rainfall grasses sown during the year have taken very well, but the report states tliUjt every effort should be made in the coming season to sow all fairways with suitable grasses while seed anu labour are cheap. ' Many of the bunkers have been re-mpdelled,while the greens have maintained their high reputation. The committee places on record its appreciation of the services of the transport committee, Messrs S. W..., Binns. J. Epps, A. F. W. Preston, and H. M.' Taylor, and trust that a similar service will be available to members during the coming season. The numbers on the roll. at the end of the year were:—Life. members 1, active members 152; ladies 91.; honorary: men 40, ladies 27; country: men 8, ladies 1; intermediate: men 7, ladies 3; summer: men 3, junior 8; total, 341. • I At the beginning of last year it was considered that the Harewood Club, in common with other similar organisa- i tions, would experience a difficult financial year, and it was decided to remove the existing entrance foe and j reduce the annual subscription, -"-nis was done, and it has proved a wise step in the circumstances, considerable improvement in the club's financial position having resulted, although rigid economies had to be observed at the same time, and it has been decided again to discontinue the entrance fee in the meantime this coming season, j The accounts and balance-sheet show an excess 6i income over expenditure during the rear of £73 13s 4d ( - after allowing £344 for depreciation. It i s hoped that with the continued enthusiasm and support of members a.further I improvement can be effected this year, i AVONDALE CLUB, ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of members of the Avondale Golf Club was held at the clubhouse on Monday evening, a record attendance of members being present. The club captain, Mr Harold Lightband, -was in the chair. In moving the adoption of the annual j report, balance-sheet, and accounts, Mr i Lightband referred to the outstanding improvement to the links during the year. Until this season the club had been unfortunate in that the weather had not assisted the extensive pror grammo of course constructional im-> provements begun in 1930. This scheme,l was now practically completed and Mi Lightband .remarked he would like all those who'knew Avondale only as it. was three years ago to visit the links now to see the difference that had been made. The annual report stated that the performances of Avondale players abroad in open events were outstanding. The club champion, Mr J. Millard," won the North Canterbury Championship (at. Harewood). the Christcnnrch Championship (at Shirley), and the Quarie Cup, while ladies' teams won both, the Bridge Cup at HaTewood and the Cowlishaw Cup at Shirley. Mrs 0. Andersen was the. winner of the Lodge Cup at Hanmer and Mr L. S. Smith took both the open junior championships at Amberley and Templeton. In the second round of the Christchurch Championship at Shirley Millard established an amateur record for the course, of 68, At tie New Zealand Championship, meeting at Heretaunga, Millard's score in th.e open was bettered by only one amateur, A. D. S. Duncan. » Administration. It wag resolved that the' subscription for 1933 be reduced and that special provision he made for married couples and junior members. It was said "that the club had vacancies for new members who would now receive the benefit of a deferred entrance fee.. A recommendation was made to the incoming committee that the season's programme should provide for several open days when, without payment of green fees, visitors would have the opportunity of playing at Avondale and trying for themselves the strategy of the Bedhead layout. It was decided to adopt an innovation that special ■ provisos should be incorporated in the Tules of the club, whereby" some concession was made available' to members such as Government officials and those who might be transferred out of Christchurch during the earlier months of the year. Election of Officers. ' The election of officers for the enduing season resulted as follows: —President, Mr J. Carter; vice-presidents: Messrs E. A. GampbeU and N. V. Smith; captain: Mr H. Lightband; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. M. Preston; committee: Messrs 0. Anderson, J\ Martin, L. A. Gordon, A. McDonald-Smith, C. W. Oborn, and K. C. Ward; hon. auditor: Mr S. C. Bingham. A social committee for the special purpose of assisting new players was set tip and the recommendation " approved that members should arrange their games with the object of helping beginners. CHRISTCHURCH LADIES' CLUB. ■ ANNUAL MEETING. . The anuual meeting of the f Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club was held in the Navy League Hall yesterday morning, Lady Wigram presiding. The annual report, as previously published in 'The Press," and the balance-sheet were adopted, on the motion of Lady Wigram, seconded b.y Mrs E. S. Vernon. Election of Officers. . The election of officers for the forthcoming season resulted as follows: President, Lady Wigram; vice-presi-dent, Mrs Vernon; captain, Mrs M. H. Godby; honorary secretary, Miss M. Beadel; honorary treasurer, Miss D. Chrystnll; committee, Mrs H. S. Lawrence, Mrs Geoffrey Kingscote, Miss J. Wilkin, Miss M, Enright, and Miss N. Hoare. Betlitag Captain's Remarks. Mrs H. S. Lawrence, the retiring captain, said that last year had been very successful, .and the affairs of the club had been car:-iod out most harmoniously by the' members of the executive.
