The export on a large scale of orange juice from the Cook Mauds to New Zealand, to replace tlie present method of sending the fruit over by the ease, is advocated by Mr C. 14. Pope, president of the New Zealand Tomato and Soft Fruit Growers'' Dominion Council. This would overcome the present restriction on fbe importation of Cook oranges after September 1, and would reduce the present high coat to the Administration of subsidising shipping services from the Island, Mr Pope claims. , ~ ■•"For vears the oranges from the CooK Islands "have not been permitted to enter New Zealand after September 1 on account of the fruit fly mtectiou dan"cr." said Mr Pope, when outlining his scheme. "This must cause considerable waste to the growers on the Islands, and there, is a great opportunity to absorb this waste fruit in the establishment of an orange juico tmile on a large scale. The contents of one ease of oranges ■ could probably be Siimed in a gallon tin, and this would make the landed cost in New Zealand considerably lov/rr than at present Ihe method is economically sound, and is costs is the subsidies to the shipping costs la mi- j oranges to services winch b n„ i eons iderNew Zen and.
