A RUSH FOR SUGAR
SUPPLIES RATIONED. EFFECT OF INCREASED DUTY.
A rush by householders to secure sugar supplies, and the consequent restriction by grocers of , the amount each person was allowed to purchase, was the direct result in Christchurch yesterday of the imposition of an additional tax of Id a pound on sugar.
No grocer in Christchurch advanced the price yesterday because there are atill stocks in hand of sugar purchased before the imposition of the duty. Those stocks are very small, it is stated, bocause the company has restricted supplies to wholesalers for some time past. February is the principal month for jam making, and the temporary shortage caused by restriction of purchase quantities will be felt acutely in many instances. Yesterday one of the largest grocery shops in the City reeoived requests for sugar which, if met, would have cleared the establishment Of its total stock of several tons by mid-afternoon. As in most shops a form Of rationing was used to meet tho situation. Casual customers were unable to buy large quantities of sugar, but regular customers were supplied with amounts according to their usual requirements. When present supplies are exhausted the extra |d a pound will be passed on to the public, bringing the price a pound to about 3d.
