annual meeting. The fourteenth annual meeting of the Addington Public Library was held last evening. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. K. Archer, presided. The annual report showed that the number of books purchased during the year had increased by about 100 over the number for the previous year. The total number of books available for circulation was 10,324. The enquiry for the non-fiction type of book during the year led the committee to set aside n sum each month for the purchase of books of that type. Mr E. Parlane, who had done the buying for the library since its inception, had found it necessary to resign, and eulogistic reference was made to his work in the past 14 years. Beceipts for the year were £343 lis. This included £BO received from the City Council. The assets, including books valued at £IOOO aiid furniture at £250, amounted to £1286 2s Id. The expenditure had been £312 10s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £3l 0s 9d. The committee had worked hard and harmoniously. The ladies deserved special thanks for their invaluable help. All those who had helped to make the institution a success were thanked. Special mention was made of the manner in which Mrs M. Hartigan had carried out her duties as caretaker, Mr J. K. Archer, commenting on the annual report, said the committee was to be congratulated on such a successful year. The general feeling of the members of the City Council was one of regret that any reduction in the annual grants had to be made. "Other members congratulated the committee on the progress shown by the library since its inception. The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Mayor (Mr D. G. Robinson, D. Sandford, Miss Risi, Messrs S. Dark, L. Calder, I*. Flintoff, F. Mathieson, E. Lane, H. Glubb, E. Howe, H. Allen, A. Heaven, I. Kobinson, and L. Sinclair.
