"Builder" invites contributions from reader* on any matters of interest which they might like to propose. Correspondence on various subjects pertaining to building will also be accepted. NOTES. Satisfactory progress is being made with the alterations to seven shop iroots in Gloucester street extending from Regent street to the building on the corner of Manchester street for Messrs Harm an and Stevens, on behalf of the Lord Gotham Estate. Floor matting which has grown dirty can be cleaned with ammonia and cold water. Avoid soap. Garden furniture can he preserved and its colour revived by giving it an application of linseed oil. Hub this well into the wood, taking care that it is free from dirt and damp at the time Cut across the centre with a fine saw, and screwed into position, cotton reel* will provide neat substitutes for knobs to cupboard doors, drawers, etc. Fixed with a small bolt they may also bo used as> knobs for lids of kettles. Stick-on labels have an annoying habit of sticking together if they are left for any length of time, and are then frequently thrown away as useless. They will separate quite easily if a ivarm iron is placed upon them. Wi ;-inging machines with rollers of indiarnbbcr should not be used lor anything that has just come out of boiling water, or the rubber will perish. To clean the rollers, wipe dry; and Tf stained or greasy, rub with a cloth dipped in turpentine, wash in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry thoroughly. To sharpen a lawnmovver.—Reverse the cogs and pinions of the mower. Turn the machine over so that the knives will rotate backwards. Adjust the screws so as to bring the knives on the bottom plate. Smear the knives and nlate with emery and oil ('more oil than emery). Run the. machine backwards for about 20 minute?. To remove tarnish caused by gas fumes from silver plate, rub the plate well with turpentine, Mix some whiting and olive oil, and rub this on to the plate with a soft cloth. Polish off with dry whiting and a very soft piece of old silk. If the tarnish is fresh. turpentine need not be used, and the whiting and oil may be applied at once. Cover a quart of used tea leaves with a quart of boiling water, and leave to stand for an hour. Strain off the liquid. It is a snlendid polish if used with a piece of soft flannel on mirrors, windows, and other jglasswtire. It can be used for polishing furniture and linoleum. A soft flannel damped with this liouid and rubbed on a polished wood floor imreirts all the brilliance of beeswax polish, but is not slippery.
